Getting my last few credits straightened out
#1
Hi Everybody,
I'm new to this whole CLEP world. I was referred here by my brother who earned great success in getting his degree.

I have recently received my accepted classes from transcripts I have sent to Excelsior and am on my way to earning an AS in Business.

I have earned a total of 36 of the 60 credits required.

So, doing the research, the classes I need and can CLEP out of are

*Social Sciences & History*
*Humanities (non writing)*
*College Algebra*
*Principles of Management*
*Principles of Marketing*
*Financial Accounting*

Cannot CLEP
*Managerial Accounting*
*Information Literacy*

I am still looking for an option for Managerial Accounting. I would prefer to just test out of it, but I can take the 16 week class if necessary, I would just prefer not to.

Has anyone else gone through this?

I also need to earn a single Business Credit and the Information Literacy credit, but haven't looked into that further

Any guidance would be very helpful. I'm hoping to find a quicker solution, but am willing to spend the time studying since I'm almost there.

Thanks in advance!

**** I did find "Straightliner" as an option rather than CLEP. Would I be better off taking the courses I could using Straightliner and then CLEPing the remaining courses?

Hi there! Have you considered Straighterline for managerial accounting? You pay $99 bucks a month plus $39 for each class, so if you can finish within a month you pay $138 plus the cost of a used, outdated textbook (I never paid more than 15 bucks) and you get 3 college credits. I did accounting I and II with SL. While I HATE accounting, I really like SL. It's got a great format and is totally self-paced.

It seems like others here have earned their Info Lit credit through Penn Foster, but I don't need it for COSC so I can't speak to that.

I have done quite a few of the CLEPs that you need and I can tell you that they're all very possible. I would really recommend the IC cards, but almost more than that, the specific feedback forum. I've used both of those for almost every test.

*Information Literacy*

I took that at EC, it was $300 or so for a 1 credit required course.
I finished it the first week, I believe there were 4 or 5 modules with exams and you get a pass/fail at the end.

There's no exams I know of that you can take to test out of managerial accounting. Maybe some ECE's or something, I'm not too familiar on anything besides CLEP and DSST, and I know there's none of those that you can take for managerial accounting. There used to be a CLEP but they don't do that one anymore.

Hi everybody!

Thanks for all the great responses. I did happen to find Straightliner after I did my research and now have my path to getting my AS - Business from Excelsior.

Straightliner for College Algebra, Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting.
CLEP for Social Sciences/History, Humanities, Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing
DSST - Intro to Business

Unfortunately the 1 credit I need can't be covered by Information Literacy.

I do have another question. Is there any test for the required BUS - 495 for the BA - Business from Excelsior? I would much rather have control of the timeline for my degree, rather than be forced to take a 15week class.

What is the title of this class? I'm not an EC student, but I could take a guess at a test that would work..

One other option is to find the same class BUS 495, but don't go through EC. See if FHSU, PF, LSU, or another school with a self-paced online option has the class. Even if you can't find a self-paced option, you'll definitely be able to take an online class through another school that offers 8 week classes and then transfer. OMG I think I would die if I had to do a 15 week class!! :ack:

Its called "Business Strategy"

I did notice TESC offers a test for a similarly titled class called "Business Strategy and Policy"

Is it possible to take the test and get credit from Excelsior for the same ? I haven't really tried to leverage Excelsior College into accepting credits for a similarly named course. Is that something that can happen? I would LOVE to be able to test out of it rather than take a 15week course.

I'm in the same boat as you, having to complete the 15 week 'capstone' or equivalent course at Excelsior. Unfortunately, from the BSBA specification sheet:

Quote:Business Policy**

** You must complete BUS 495: Business Strategy at Excelsior College to satisfy this requirement

So it seems like it really needs to be done at EC.

Thats whats looking like may happen to me. I am still curious about the TESC exam though, I may just take it and try to leverage it as the same class, if not it will apply to some credits elsewhere

Irnbru, i do have a question for you though. I may not have done enough research regarding Straightliner and preemptively ordered the books for the College Algebra, Accounting I and II courses (ebay, less than $100 for all 3). Are the texts really necessary? I'm getting antsy not starting my work and would much rather jump into the courses if thee texts aren't completely necessary than wait for the texts to arrive before I start.

If someone else has an answer I'd much appreciate, I feel like I'm wasting time watching March Madness when I could be working towards credits.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you may have to take the class.. bummer. At least you can test out of almost everything else.

To answer your question about the SL classes, yes you do need to have the text. While the online lessons are interesting, many of the test questions come DIRECTLY from the book. For all of my SL classes, I would sit there with the book open in my lap during each test and reference it frequently.
