"Big 3" degree value?

Semi-unrelated question.... If I sent Excelsior transcripts from another college... on the transcripts there's an A, A, B, and an F, will the F transfer and lower my GPA ?????

I'm not sure if this helps, but I've transferred credits to Athabasca and they don't transfer the F's. However from what I understand, when you apply say to grad school or whatever, your old schools will keep those F's and you might need to send your school THAT transcript as well. Anyone know a way around this?

They won't take the F and if they don't take it, it shouldn't show up on your GPA. The problem you would run into with your GPA would be if you had a D. COSC took my D in chemistry. (hey... I was in high school and took my first ever chemistry class at a local community college ) So, I had the tough choice of seeing if they would remove it and replacing the credits, or leaving it on and really hurting my GPA.

My choice? Keep the D and the credits. LOL... I really don't think you'll run into this with an F though. It just won't appear.

I just interviewed -- and hired! -- a smart young lady who told me she changed her major to Finance from Accounting because "you use your brain more in Finance and it's forward looking rather than about the past". So I still say Accounting post-bac if you want to be a CPA, but a Finance undergrad might be more flexible should you change your mind, find you want to work in risk, etc. And because you have to take the Finance concentration somewhere besides the Big 3 and you have benefits that cover costs, go to a non-Big 3 school.

I'm going to talk to the rep on Monday and get an unofficial degree audit based on existing credits... I'll see what he says.

I've also considered switching over to finance....

Really?? That doesn't seem fair or in line with what COSC has done so far, but I guess every school is different.

Different schools may have different policies towards transfer credits. For example, the school I work for does not transfer GPA. The credits simply show up as "TR" on your transcript where a grade would normally be. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on what kind of grades you had at the previous institution. We will also not take anything below the grade of C. So, a C- will not transfer while a C+ will.

Check with any school first before you elect to transfer in any credits.

The one problem though, from what I understand andy, is that when you graduate, if you want to show people your transcripts, transferred courses do not come. up on official transcripts, you need to show them your transcripts from all of the institutions you attended...am i right on this? so it doesn't really matter in that situation, the other people will see those other marks as posted by your previous school?

I'm going to double-check that OE800 85. That is a fair point. I am used to seeing transcripts from other colleges and universities and not my own. I view my personal unofficial all the time.

However, now that I think about it, quite a few schools do show transfer credits on the official transcripts. Usually the classes that transfered are denoted by a "TR" or a "P" for pass or something similar to let the person reviewing know that those are transfer credits.

I have not ever been asked for any transcripts much less a group of them together. I would imagine that most folks are probably just asked for the transcript from the entity that actually conferred the degree, but I may be wrong.

I think that if you're ever asked for a copy of each and every transcript for your career, it might just be easier to get a copy from the registrar of the school that conferred the degree. They will have compiled, with notes, all of the paperwork associated with the transfer of credits. They may or may not give this to you, but it does not hurt to ask before you try to cover a ton of other institutions.

We are starting with Harvard and working down from there. TESC is not Harvard, but it is accredited from the same place as Princeton. Thus a Bachelors from TESC is not exactly fropm a cornflake box. I certainly have had to work for my credits. Thats why I am seeking relief with a few CLEP courses. Everything helps. That all said. A Bachelors in my neighborhood [is little more than a HS Diploma anymore] Thus I think the correct formula is strive for a 3.0 GPA and get into a name brand Grad Cert. Look around--there are some great name brand universities offering 12 credit Grad Certs, e.e. Penn State, Univ of Florida, Berkeley, Tulane, etc etc. I think the smart strategy is to bank out the bulk at e.g. TESC [on the cheap] and then top it off with a 12 credit Grade Cert from a Top Tier. It is sort of smoke and mirrors, but trust me on this, Employers will be looking at my Grad Cert and life experience, not my TESC bachelor which was actually the vehicle to get me to the GRAD CERT. Same thing with the CLEP course. They are just a vehicle tpo get you to the Bachelors quicker and cheaper. (in my opinion) Don

I hear a lot of people talking about getting degrees from the "Big 3" especially by testing out of a lot of the credits.

Excelsior, Thomas Edison State College and Charter Oak...

How are these degrees regarded by employers when compared to a "regular" 4 year degree?

I know a lot of people on here go for these "big 3" online schools so you will probably be biased, but I was just wondering and I can't really find any reliable information online.

So if I got a degree from a traditional public college, like Virginia State University for example, in accounting, how would this compare to an accounting degree from one of the "big 3?"
