Excelsior - NYU Foreign Language Exam?
#41
wb.john Wrote:You're welcome!

At first I thought it was all-or-nothing, but reading further on their website led me to believe that it depends on how high you score.

I'll know more about what score equates to how many credits after some time.

The BYU's disadvantage is that it's a correspondence exam. So it's a little troublesome to schedule and you have to wait to get your score.

NAP, do you think you'll take any of these BYU exams?

Thanks for your quick reply!

My biggest interests are currently French, German, and Italian. I will probably try the French and German CLEPs, but BYU could be a good alternative for me.

Please keep me updated on your progress. I’d really appreciate knowing more about how BYU works out for you.

Here's an update on the NYU exam vs the ACTFL OPI exam. Be aware that the 16 NYU credits (assuming that you score the maximum) would be OK as long as you don't have other language credits already. Otherwise you should check first for potential lower level credits duplication with your EC advisor because NYU credits can duplicate others, specifically CLEP language credits. But there may be other cases...

The ACTFL OPI exam does not duplicate CLEP language credits, so for that combination the OPI & CLEP exams are the optimal option (potentially 22 LL + 2UL credits).

I found some colleges that grant credit for the BYU exams. It seems that a pass is defined as 70% or greater. The two levels are graded separately, so you could pass level one and get the credit for that, but not level two if you failed it. I think that level one is worth 8 credits and level two is worth 4 credits.

Thank you for finding this! It is nice to have a better idea of how the BYU scoring works. I'll have to think about how it would compare to CLEP.

I got the relieving news that I have passed the BYU exam! Although I haven't received the score report, I was notified in a response to my email. There was a problem with my test key and that might explain why I have not received my report yet. Anyways, that puts me at 80 credits in theory, quite a few more than I imagined myself having at this point.

Hooray!! That's great! Congratulations!

Are you thinking about trying a second BYU exam for another language?

Thanks. Smile

Well, I don't think I'll need to credit-wise, so it's a little hard to justify spending the money. I should be able to pass a Malay exam if they had one. Afrikaans and Dutch are attractive because you can earn 24 credits for two simple languages that are almost the same.

Just to follow up... I was able to confirm in my official evaluation that BYU's correspondence exams can be used for 12 lower level credits at EC.

I was reading this about the FLATs exam and saw this

Foreign Language Achievement Testing Service--BYU

1) Q: As a non-BYU student, can I receive BYU credit through these exams?
A: No. BYU does not grant credit to students who do not have a BYU transcript.

and

3) Q: How much credit can I earn for taking one of these exams?
A: The exams are designed to evaluate a student's ability in conjunction with the first three semesters of a language track. This generally means that students can earn up to 12 hours of credit, depending on the results of the exam. However, non-BYU students must make all arrangements for credit amounts and purchasing through their own institutions.

so has anyone actually received credit at EC or TESC for this exam? and if so... how did you go about doing it? thanks!

I have credit on my status report at EC for the BYU FLATS Indonesian exam. The fact that BYU doesn't grant credit is not important. They send a report with the credit recommendations and this is sufficient for EC to award credit. I took my exam at a local university for a $25 proctoring fee, and I later realized that the library proctors exams for free. The exam you take is actually split into a level one exam and a level two exam with the first awarding 4 credits and the second one awarding 8 credits. All the credit is lower level, unfortunately. There is only one listening section and it is at the beginning of the first exam. There are cultural questions at the end of the second exam, so you might want to make sure to study the history of the country in which the language is primarily spoken, and make sure you know the most important things.

I am not sure about TESC's policy regarding these exams.
