Information Systems and Computer Applications Test
#1
If you paid for a membership to this website to study for the Information Systems and Computer Applications CLEP, ask for your money back! The 293 questions are out-dated and not representative of the questions on the test. I scored 57 and that was with memorizing all of the questions and answers given in this website's study guide plus the 70-question practice exam from the official CLEP guide and about another 10 hours of looking up terms on the web and using Wikipedia (not a great source). I had 10 days to study, for 2-3 hours per day, which was plenty of time, except that I had a difficult time finding a decent study guide. I would recommend reviewing a text book from the actual class. At least that way you might actually learn something. You need to do more than just memorize 300 answers to pass this test. This test covers a broad subject. You need to have a good understanding of computer system design and function at many levels. Good Luck!

Yes, congratulations on passing this exam!

I am currently studying for all three computer exams (2 DSST and 1 CLEP). (I consider the IC flashcards to be a good guide of the topics that will be covered, but they do not know what specific questions will be on the test.)

I have the Official CLEP Study Guide for 2009. I noticed that the breakdown in the guide for this exam has many differences when compared to the CLEP website.

CLEP: Information Systems and Computer Applications

Since the exam may have changed since I bought the guide, I am considering buying the online guide that the CLEP site offers to see if there are updated sample questions.

I am curious, lisatutaj, what is the date of the official CLEP guide that you used and does it match the breakdown on the CLEP website?

Thanks for your help!

When you are taking any CLEP/DSST or other exam memorizing these flashcards is not the point. You are supposed to demonstrate that you KNOW the subject. Memorizing even over 300 facts is not knowing the subject, you need to read those facts and understand the concepts.

Just my 2c, but you did pass and 57 is more then a couple of points

Do we know if any of these exams are duplicated by the GRE Computer Science?

That's a good question! I have not checked with EC about this, yet.

From the GRE thread: http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...#post51132

JLA_8 Wrote:"The GRE Computer Science exam can award credit, however it will all be
score specific.

Here is the break-down for the Computer Science GRE:

685 score: 3 LL credits satisfying the Intro to Computers ( IT
elective)
700 score: 6 LL credits satisfying above plus High Level Language (
IT elective)
715 score: 9 LL credits satisfying above plus a second High Level
Language ( IT elective)
730 score: 12 LL credits satisfying above plus Discrete Math (math
requirement)
745 score: 12 LL credits, 3 UL credits satisfying above plus Data
Structures (one of the Object Oriented Software concentration core)
760 score: 12 LL credits, 6 UL credits satisfying above plus
Computer Architecture ( core requirement)
770 score: 12 LL credits, 9 UL credits satisfying above plus
Operating Systems (core requirement)
780 score: 12 LL credits, 12 UL credits satisfying above plus UL
technical elective
810 or higher: 12 LL credits and 18 UL credits."

The 3 tests I am planning to take:

DSST Intro to Computing
CLEP Information Systems & Computer Applications
DSST Management Information Systems (upper-level credit)

It looks like the first one (DSST Intro to Computing) does.

I'm not sure about the other two. Any thoughts?

I would say, probably. If the Computer Science Degree includes everything for a major of that name, then any test in that field would be duplication. But you never know: A&I Lit doesn't count as duplicate credit for us GRE Lit people. Big Grin

We can't know for sure without EC's input, but it should be noted that CS and IS are related, but separate fields.

So my feeling is that DSST MIS will not be duplicated by the GRE. I am not sure about the CLEP.

That's why I'm going for literature and not computer science. Confusedmilelol:
