All ALEKS stat courses duplicate at TESC
#21
This concerns me regarding beginning, intermediate and college Algebra. I know I'm ok with Trig...

I looked closely at the content of the three ALEKS Stats courses before signing up, because I'm planning to take more Stats and I wanted to be sure I was getting full punishment from my intro class. They are very similar-- the difference in content is less than 15% of the topics -- and the level of the work is the same across all 3 courses. It's a drag if the school led you to think it would be any other way, and I love a credit-rich deal as much as anyone, but really, guys...it would be kinda irresponsible for the school to give credit for 2, let alone 3 of these things.

Yes I received credit for both and it was 2 weeks ago. I requested an evaluation of the ace transcript. Im thinking it may be because I am in dual programs AAS Business & BA Social Science.

I've been talking to upper classmen at TESC regarding the masters program but to be honest am now considering one of the other schools. Just not excited by the administrative problems such as we are going through right now. It may not have affected me directly but sooner or later it will. I dont want to be in the middle of a masters program for them to change the rules on me; too much money to play around with. I plan to keep both eyes open over the next year.

taylor Wrote:[quote=bricabrac]Hmmm, I don't know. Sounds strange. Graduate Advisor...what's that? Maybe try making an appointment to speak with a real advisor, last time it took me 1-2 weeks for an appointment. But atleast you will get someone who know the rules. The other option is to request a transcript evaluation. This way they will see the difference in the stats courses. I heard the Arts Advisors are different than the Science Advisors. Maybe its not the advisor but the programs. Honestly at this point between your post and NJ I am totally confused.

Good luck!

bricabrac, I was thinking about taking graduate courses at TESC which is why I was assigned to a Graduate advisor. She still takes care of all my changes to my BA evaluations. It sounds like you're one of the lucky ones that got credit for both Statistics classes. Was this pretty recent? And are you a current student at TESC? I get the feeling though if I had told the academic advisor that sent me the TESC conversions in early December to place the Business Statistics on my Evaluation I would've been lucky too. Now I'm a day late a dollar short.

Intermediate and College Algebra share a lot of topics. Beginning is probably safe, but I'd get an approval on Intermediate.

Soup your good to go with all three algebra courses. You can take either Trig or PreCalc not both.

jadechow, thanks for the info

bricabrac, Maybe it is the major but the advisor nor Head of Advisement said it was major specific, not once. Regardless, I've scratched Business Statistics off my list. Now I got to focus on FEMA. I'm going to call them tomorrow but do you have a list of FEMA courses that TESC will accept? Of course, I will double check with TESC tomorrow but I want to be prepared so I don't have to exchange multiple emails or phone conversations to get approved courses on my evaluation. I also noticed it seems like most of the courses are 1 credit.

the list of courses are in the link jade provided. i cant get to my list right now. ask for a revised list from advisement. i logged onto the site a few days ago and looks like they added a bunch of new courses.

Also, whether they accepted all the course or not didnt really matter to me, i wanted them on my transcript in case i needed them later for the masters program. The business stats is 300 level course. I understand the beh stats has been transcribed as upper level at one of the other schools. So just depends on your next degree. :-)) Be careful with FEMA, those courses are addicting! I really enjoyed them!

Wow, 2 weeks ago consider yourself lucky. I'm jealous. I guess the AAS must've saved you, which would be the only difference that I see. Although, if I were you I'd probably never mention ALEKS again with Advisement just to be on the safe side.

Yeah, I know what you mean about considering other masters program. I was actually considering their HLS graduate certificate which is only 4 classes but decided to go for a MPA elsewhere at a later time.

This is where it gets strange...I had a LONG discussion with advisement regarding those courses. I talked so much about aleks and the difficulties she said she would keep it in mind for other students who were struggling with the guided courses. Now you understand my confusion. If they are going to refer their math students what is the problem. Again I think its the program. Will follow the conversations the tesc boards for the next 6 months to see how this plays out. BTW, it would make no sense to duck from advisement as the transcripts go through final review/approval before graduation.

According to the advisor I spoke to today her argument was if you have it on your Evaluation it's your contract. Like I said previously they have a support ticket from me which shows their ALEKS conversions from another advisor which shows Business Statistics as OPM351. But I see what you're saying about the transcripts going through a final review/approval. That would be extremely upsetting for anybody to have credits overturned after being on the Evaluation. These are the headaches we have to deal with trying to get a degree from cyber world.

Thanks for the FEMA info.
