What English test will Excelsior accept?
#1
I have been planning out my degree, but according to the catalog, Excelsior won't give you credit for the CLEP General Exam in English Comp w/ essay to satisfy the writing requirement for a B.S. Psychology. There is an ECE exam for this (EngX101 or EngX111), but I was wondering if there were other (less expensive) tests for this requirement?
What have you guys done?

Do a search here on Straighterline. It's $99 for one month, and you should be able to get through at least one class in that month. Get approval from your EC advisor, take Straighterline's English Composition I class (ACE reviewed, but not transferable except to their four partner schools), enroll at Fort Hays State University (regionally accredited partner school) for $30, transfer the Straighterline credits to Fort Hays, and then send the Fort Hays transcript ($2) to Excelsior. Note: the other three partner schools aren't as flexible about being used to launder the SL credits!

Not only will you fulfill the written English requirement, you'll fulfill it with graded credit from an RA college. As long as you're at Straighterline, take their College Algebra class to take care of EC's quantitative reasoning requirement.

BSLS Excelsior College, conferred 9-09
started MS in Instructional Design program, Spring 2010

April 4 2009 through July 6 2009: 1 GRE subject exam + 1 Penn Foster credit + 11 DANTES exams = 61 credits. Average per-credit cost = $23.44.

Thanks so much. I looked at SL yesterday but wasn't sure if I could "use" one of the schools. Fort Hayes actually made my short list but didn't have a distance degree in Psych (switched from Sociology). I applied at SUNY ESC when I realized I still needed to take a lot of classes and they were cheaper than Excelsior. Ultimately I think I will be applying to Excelsior and transferring everything there (hence looking at their requirements).
Thanks for the words of wisdom!

I'm doing it thru Penn Foster,,2 20question multi choice test, 3 essays and a journal.....its 3 credits for 90$ a credit...books included...no proctor needed, go at your pace, but cant submit an essay until the other is graded...which can take a week each....

Thanks. I looked at Penn Foster as well as a lot of others. I have put off taking this class for 20 years. I think part of my stubborness to just get it over is fear of writing assignments. Not even sure why since I was an honors and AP English student. Think I was burnt out on it all. Now I have an essay phobia Smile I like the idea of only 3 essays. However, I'm going to graduate school after I get my B.S. and I'm worried I won't get enough instruction. I'm very conflicted, huh. Oh well. I just need to bite the bullet and get it done. Thanks for the info. I'll think about it (hahahaha)

HELP!!!

Is there any input here from those who have actually done this -- Penn Foster or Straighterliner, Aleks??? and gotten the credits accepted by EC?

Just received my unofficial review for the A.S. and the only thing they are requiring the WER. Will only apply my Prof and Tech Writing as credits for AP (?) not for writing. My school here in Florida accepted CLEP Eng Comp with Essay for 3 credits and Prof and Tech.

Again, can anyone confirm ECs acceptance of these credits. Need them fast.

Want the A.S. in hand and then on to finish the B.S.

THANKS!

You can fulfill EC's Written English Requirement with a statement from another regionally accredited college stating that you have fulfilled that school's freshman composition requirement. Do you think you can get a letter from an advisor or a dean at that school stating that you've fulfilled that's schools freshman composition requirement?

Also, if you have taken two or more courses that are designated as "writing-intensive, writing-emphasis" courses, then the Written English Requirement can be met that way. The Florida Public University System refers to these courses as the Gordon rule writing courses. If you've taken two Gordon rule writing courses, you may be able to use those as fulfillment of your WER.

The EC Liberal Arts Catalog explains the requirements in detail. The WER information is on page 16 of the current edition.

I found your previous post fascinating , so I looked up the Gordon Rule.

This link has a list of courses that fulfill that rule in FL at one of their colleges.

Gordon Rule

Thank you.

I probably should have explained this a little better, though.

I attended Florida State University about a decade ago, briefly. The graduation requirements included something called the Gordon rule, which was divided into two parts. There was a math requirement, although I don't remember all the details.

The other requirement of the Gordon rule was the writing requirement. To earn the degree, we had to take four courses in writing...including English Comp I & English Comp II. The other two courses came from writing-intensive courses. There were quite a few from which to choose. Many were offered by the English department, but not all of them. I took a literature course and a philosophy course for my Gordon rule writing courses.

Anyway, the point is that the courses were designated as writing-intensive. I would assume that Florida isn't the only state whose universities have this sort of requirement, but I haven't exactly researched this for confirmation. Since two writing-intensive courses fulfill the Written English Requirement from Excelsior, I could have used those two courses to fulfill the WER.

In an ironic twist, I had already earned Advanced Placement English credit before I ever attended Florida State, so that was used for the Written English Requirement instead. Furthermore, in case anyone is wondering, the philosophy course counted toward the humanities requirement, and the literature course was considered duplicative of the GRE Literature and as such was not accepted for credit at EC. Go figure. Smile

Thank you, MaieJaie. I'll call my counselor at Broward College.

Actually, there is an exception to the Gordon Rule that I was able to get, as I had been in a college prior to 1983, so I only had to have CLEP Eng Comp and the Prof Technical Writing course. Back then, we apparently were required to do more writing both in high school and earlier college courses, so the state has an exception to that. Guess there are a few benefits to being an oldie moldie. Smile I also found the state links showing acceptance of CLEP as well as another one for the Gordon rule and the possible exemptions, which then referred you back to a counselor. So I'm back to what you suggested.

Thanks. I'll keep you posted.
