Encouragement for those on the fence

Hello all, I am posting to share my experience with UMPI to assist those that may be still on the fence or in their research phase. 

I entered into UMPI's Program in the second term session of the Fall 2023.  I was not working at the time and was able to devote nearly my entire awake time into classes.   

After finding this site, doing my own research, and some youtube videos, I started my journey in Sept of 2023 by signing up for Sophia. 

Through Sophia I managed to bring in 60 credits.

I had completed Composition 1 and 2  (English 1 and 2) years prior when I went to Paramedic School which was accepted along with those Paramedic Classes and Clinicals coming in as a electives.

I had to drop two of the classes I signed up for right after the start of the fifth week (with in 48 hours of adding them) as I became ill with the dreaded 'rona.  But I was able to complete 14 of the 16 classes that I had attempted.

I felt that the Intro to Criminal Justice instructor was very vague on what  he wanted to see in the essays, but overall an informative class. 


I STRONGLY recommend ANY AND ALL Classes taught by Dr John Zaborney (DR Z) .   Hot only are his classes put together well, and easy to follow, you can supplement your information with 'Crash Course' Videos that backup and reinforce his materials. 
I was a fan of the idea of Films of the Cold War, but was not thrilled with its execution as most of the video links were inaccessible.  (Not taught by Dr Z this go around)

After reviewing the requirements and the classes I had completed I emailed my advisor and was placed on the track to get a Degree with a Dual Concentration, Poly Sci and History concentrations.  
Spring 2024 term one I completed the remaining requirements to fulfill the double  concentration requirements, which was 8 more classes.

I had some issues with Sophia and the Spanish classes and took my chances with UMPI, and I got to say Dr Elizabeth Estela Reyes-Fournier Spanish classes through UMPI were in my opinion easier and more forgiving however taking the miniature quizzes and having to wait up to 48 hours to get a grade before proceeding can be a bit blah but overall I enjoyed the experience.  I was able to schedule Zoom's when I needed additional assistance and i felt she was always pleasant and helpful.  



Now You are prolly thinking - "Well if he can do it ..."  And you are probably right, but  just keep in mind for this course load and amount of writing you will need to do is honestly 40-50 hours a week.  I had allot of pre-UMPI Knowledge of most of these subjects as I am a lover of History Documentaries and what i call the University of Youtube education ( lol) . 


If you nose down and grind it out you can get a section / milestone done pretty quickly if you understand the material upon first reading. You do not 'need' anything outside the course work that is provided however I always tried to supplement my knowledge with youtube or other documentaries when able to find something relevant to the topic of the class. 

I am awaiting conferment, but can happily announce that as soon as I finished the last class with UMPI I immediately  began applying to master's programs.  I was offered a position within three programs. 

This fall I will be attending East Tennessee State University, Master of Arts, Appalachian Studies (Falls under anthropology/history) With a Graduate Assistantship (Tuition paid, and monthly stipend (No its not alot but it will ensure I don't have to eat Ramen unless I want to)) 


My original goal was to find and attend a law school after UMPI but after further research and conversations with my State Bar, I found that It would be near impossible at this time for me to obtain a licence to practice in my State if I did not attend an instate school (Can transfer out of state licence into this state after practicing for 7 years), Thus I am going down my second path.

Were you looking only at non-ABA law schools? Because an out-of-state ABA-accredited JD would presumably be licensable immediately in your state.

Can you clarify that you completed 14 classes in one session and that required 45-50 hours per week for that specific session?

@Jocon, Congrats on getting the UMPI degree with double concentration! Great work in getting the most credits out of your previous credits and Sophia.org before moving onto UMPI. That's a very good pace in getting UMPI classes done as well! Bravo, congrats again, you've done it and now starting the Master's! Wow!

Roughly yes, it may take some one else More or less hours but thats  rougly what I put it.  I was knocking out a class on adverage every 1.5 days

I'm attending the Spring 2 session and have 30 credits/10 courses left to complete my degree in History at UMPI. I transferred in all other credits. My goal is to finish all ten in this session. I only have UL History (4 courses) and electives (6 courses) left. My plan currently is to do all History and POS courses. What is your best advice? Strategy? What is the best order for the courses? Does it matter? 

Here is the list of courses I'm thinking of taking: HTY 439, HTY370 (Arab), HTY 301, HTY 489, POS 335, POS 301, POS 343, POS 332, HTY 456 and HTY 350. Do you have any advice or opinions about these courses which would be helpful? Do you think there are any courses that are shorter than the ones listed? Any and all advice would be appreciated.

The OP hasn't signed in for 8 months, they may be busy with their current studies and what not... My suggestion is to update your particular thread as there may have been recommendations for History and Political Science alternatives....

I will say HTY 489 and POS 335 were two of may fave easy courses. Im currently stuck with POS 301. Its my last course to graduate! Youll find some professors are very vague on their requirements and rubrics for milestones and then you’ll submit a paper 2 times the length of listed requirements but get a redo because you included 19 of the 20 points and they want data on all 20.  Thats just an example. Great school otherwise. Im just so critical on myself and get frustrated when material is not well put together. Good luck though!
