Competency Based Masters in Finance?
#1
Hello folks- I've submitted all my info and details over to TAMU Commerce and while I await to hear back and (hopefully) finish my bachelor's with them, I've begun the hunt for a master's program. Should be doable before January with the credits I have.

I'm planning on finishing with a BAAS in Organizational Leadership, and would like to pursue a M.S. in Finance, but I'm not finding any programs that fit the bill.

Before I look at other options, does anyone know of any such program?

Just wondering, there are so many options and 'in between options', it depends on your end goal and if these would work for you... Must it be in Finance or would you like Accounting or something similar to that instead? I would check the institutions listed on the WIKI for Competency Based programs and see what options there are at the Masters level... Accounting for example, there is Masters in Accounting at WGU. If an MBA with a concentration in Finance would work for you, then PUG has the MBA Finance concentration: https://catalog.purdueglobal.edu/graduat...eplanstext

(PUG doesn't list any of the concentration courses for MBAs being available in competency-based format, though, only the generic core courses.)

I have done a fair bit of looking for degrees in finance and economics/applied economics. Haven’t found any competency based programs.

I think the best bet would be a fairly quick/inexpensive master’s in finance from a place like University of the Cumberlands or University of Texas Permian Basin (both around $10k). Another option would be a Level 7 diploma followed by a Masters in Finance and Accounting (Top-Up) from a UK university. Might be a little cheaper, but likely would provide more flexibility in scheduling, if that’s a major concern.

University of Northampton, for instance, will admit international distance students for their MSc In Accounting and Finance with an OTHM Level 7 diploma in Accounting and Finance.  Tuition is around $2,500 for the dissertation/degree completion phase:

Master of Accountancy (taxation concentration), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, in progress.
Master of Business Administration (financial planning specialization), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, in progress.

BA, UMPI.  Accounting major; Business Administration major/Management & Leadership concentration.  Awarded Dec. 2021.

In-person/B&M: BA (history, archaeology)
In-person/B&M: MA (American history)

Sophia: 15 courses (42hrs)

Oh well, PUG's just an example of the MBA with Finance concentration, another non competency based option would be Fort Hays, they also have the MBA with Finance concentration. It really depends on the student and to see if that would suffice, if not, then look for a 'straight up' Masters in Finance, I just wanted to see if that MBA with Finance was a choice or not to begin with...

I'm sticking away from MBA programs for now because I'd like to pursue one later in life with some more work experience.

University of Texas Permian Basin might be convenient as I'm located there. I'll do some more digging on it this weekend.

Since you're in Texas, the most selective program might be this one, if you can get in and have the tuition assistance/reimbursement, this would be my choice: https://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/graduate/...s-finance/

Edit to Add: And if you're in an absolute cash crunch, then the Nationally Accredited freebie (entry exam is a hard one, I failed it), is another recommendation: https://www.wqu.edu/programs/mscfe/
