I wanted to give a good friend of mine a big shout-out. Her name is Tiny and she is the Director and Co-Founder of POOR Magazine. She's kind of a legend in the SF Bay Area activist community. She is also the author of several books and she co-founded a homeschool co-op/alternative school.
Anyway, she only got through the eighth grade because her social worker mother became disabled. Tiny became her caregiver.
Tiny is in the MFA program at Goddard College without a high school diploma or BA! She was one of my inspirations to go back to school and get a college degree. There is always a way, y'all, with some creative thinking and strategizing.
Finished Degrees and Certificates:
AAS, BOG (Info Systems)---Pierpont Community and Technical College, December 2023
Certificate, Community Health Worker---Berkeley City College, December 2023
Currently:
BA, Liberal Studies---Thomas Edison State University, (July 2024-present)
Considering:
MA in Counseling---not sure where.

Great for her, it's intriguing how she managed to get into the MFA without the Bachelors/High School... It's awesome to see alternative entry options for those who don't have that previous education or experience and be conditionally accepted. If there is a way to getting to that educational goal without debt, more power to her... It's great that you're thinking creatively and also strategically with your educational goal as well...

She has a huge body of work and she has even lectured at Columbia and Berkeley. She also has an amazing support system. I love how people are starting to see the importance of lived experience in terms of the educational system.
I've been doing community organizing for three decades and now I see how it all ties into my educational goals.
