What Sophia classes do I need to take?
#1
Hey,
So it looks like I will be going to UMPI and I have a few questions about Sophia and how to finish my degree a little faster. I am getting a bachelor's in History & Political science with a concentration in History. My plan is to graduate in a year or less and then apply for a Master's Degree somewhere else (As of right now I am looking at LA Tech). The faster I can get my bachelor's done the more money i will have for a Master's.

As of Right now I have 42 credits, but I do not think they will all transfer, unfortunately. Here are all my credits from the first school I attended. (Georgia Gwinnett College)

Biological Sciences I w/Lab - 4 Credits - B
English Composition I - 3 Credits - B
Survey of U.S. History I - 3 Credits - A
College Algebra - 3 Credits - A

English Composition II - 3 Credits - B
Elementary French I - 3 Credits - A
Survey of World History I - 3 Credits - B
Introduction of Sociology - 3 Credits - B

Precalculus - 4 Credits - C
Intro to Human Geography - 3 Credits - A
Biological Sciences II - 3 Credits - A
Intro to Computing - 4 Credits - B
American Government - 3 Credits - B
Total = 42

Do I need to complete the Sophia courses before I enroll? or could I take the courses while attending UMPI and still be accepted as credits?

Where can I find which Sophia courses will be accepted and which ones do I need for my degree path? (I plan to take the more degree-focused classes at UMPI, I want to get the General studies at of the way mostly)

Is there going to be any issues with the Sophia credits when I apply for my Masters's degree?

Thanks for your time!

Hey, it's best to do one at a time... Always complete the Sophia.org credits first to verify they can transfer into your degree. UMPI courses should be taken separately as you want to finish them easier/faster by concentrating on those courses and not be distracted by completing something else.

Further to that, it's like a subscription, you're wasting $ on two subscriptions when you can pay for one at a time and plow through Sophia.org first and then UMPI afterwards. Sophia.org courses count as alternative transfer credit, your UMPI will be graded credit and you'll have at least 30.

Masters programs will generally look at your final year or two of studies, you should be fine for most programs. Create a spreadsheet, make the file viewable and not editable on your google/one drive and link us to it. Here's the WIKI to reference your spreadsheet with courses: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:UMPI

Just so you (and future students) don't wind up getting confused and/or going to the wrong place, it's "Sophia", not "Shopia".

Why don't you think all of your credits will transfer? IIRC, UMPI accepts anything C or better. So, even your Precalculus should transfer. You can see GEC (gen eds at other schools) equivalencies for Sophia here: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...quivalents

A fuller degree plan for History is here: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...egree_Plan

I would start by creating a spreadsheet and matching up what you have to GEC requirements. Example: Biological Sciences w/ lab will meet requirements 3C and 3E. I don't see a physical science to meet requirement 3D, so you'd want to take either Environmental Science or Intro to Chemistry from Sophia. You do not need the Intro to Chemistry Lab, because you already have a lab science.

Classes that have the same or similar names should work for the same requirements as the Sophia classes. Survey of US History I = Sophia US History I. You wouldn't need to take Sophia's Sociology class because you already have Introduction of Sociology. Human Geography meets requirement 5A but NOT 2B (see http://catalog.umpi.edu/preview_program....3&poid=239 ).

Once you have your spreadsheet figured out, share it here and we can help you make any tweaks.

As for whether the Sophia classes will hinder your efforts to get a Master's degree, they shouldn't. I would contact the school(s) that you're interested in to see if they care about ACE credits in your undergrad degree, but most graduate schools don't care that much about the gen eds and electives. Especially not if you plan on taking the major courses through UMPI.

I posted a spreadsheet for a HTY major somewhere in the degree planning forum earlier this month, but it's for a second Bachelor's and probably isn't super relevant. Here are some things that could help:
  • You could check the Transfer Equivalencies database to see how courses have transferred into UMPI in the past. I see several courses from Georgia Gwinnett, including ones you posted here.
  • You'll need a French 2 or a Spanish 1+2. Consider the ACTFL for French, or Sophia/SDC for the Spanish sequence.
  • You could also take SDC's Political Science 101 for the second required POS course within your History major.
  • I recommend SDC's History 108 and History 308, since they have significant overlap and both come in as upper-level credit.
  • You'll want Sophia's U.S. History 2, but there's no transfer for World History 2, so you'd do that at UMPI.

BA History & Political Science (Minors: Pre-Law, Intl. Studies, Social Studies, Criminal Justice, & Business Admin) | UMPI

Certificate Teachers College College Advising Program | Columbia
Certificate College Access Counseling | Rice
Certificate College Admissions Specialist | American School Counselors Association
