Where are my Amberton peeps? Have a question

I'm just finishing up 2 classes with Dr Page - Human Sexuality and Family Studies. it was just crazy with papers and exams due the same week back to back. Feeling like if I can get through that I can get through anything.

Looking to choose my next courses - has anyone taken any CSL courses they can comment on or perhaps Aging and End of Life Issues or Conflict Management and Resolution?

I have not taken any CSL courses. Most of them are on campus only it looks like. I'm in Conflict Management and Resolution right now. I have really enjoyed this class. There is a different professor for the Winter term. You can read the syllabus and see what the workload is like.

There are actually 12+ classes for winter semester that are CSL. I only want to point that out in case that scares anyone away from taking a counseling or Family Studies degree

I emailed Professor Hebbard to see if he is teaching that course again because I did see there is another professor doing it for winter and Rate My Professor doesn't look like she's someone I want to take a class with. 

Have you been taking more than one class each semester and do you work FT? That's what I've been doing but work slows down for me a bit in the Nov-Dec time frame so I'm trying to pick 2 to take at the same time that won't kill me.

The 3 main counseling degrees can only be completed by Texas residents. There's all kinds of disclosures about them in all communication about degree programs. They go a bit overboard with it. So some of the counseling online classes may not be open to you if you're not in Texas or in one of those programs. Have you asked your advisor about taking CSL courses? 

I do not believe Dr. Hebbard has any online classes for Winter. I totally lucked out with him teaching this term. I am not sure if they are on any particular course rotation. Dr. Palmer told me that the professors don't get to select their courses. So I'm not sure how that's all figured out. 

I've been taking 3 courses a term. I'm not working full time. This term I have 4 classes and I do NOT recommend this to anyone. It's been awful. There is sooooo much work in 4 classes. Doesn't help that I have Strategic Management which is my capstone. This course is difficult. 

I had 3 classes with Dr. Palmer over the summer. She uses business books instead of textbooks which is really nice. I enjoyed all of her classes. I felt like I got a lot out of all of them. The discussions don't require responses with her which is really nice. You do write 5-6 papers. None of which are horrible. 

I just read about Dr. Paul on Rate My Professor. Above you refer to him as she so I'm not sure if we are looking at the same professor. Many of the reviews are from over 10 years ago so I wouldn't put much faith in many of them. There are also a lot of students who complain about the workload in every class. Some just don't have any idea what grad school is like and think it should be easy. There's been a few people who think like this in several of my classes. If you're in that department, it doesn't seem like he can be avoided. He uses a different book than Dr. Hebbard. The assignments sound similar. As we have 5 papers to write - one on each week's reading. We read 2 chapters every other week. We have to write a paper on each chapter and then a 3 page paper on the video clips he's given us and how they relate to our lectures and reading. 

HBD6768 has a few required Saturday Zoom meetings. Would those work with your schedule? That class reads like there is going to be quite a bit of work. There's a midterm and final exam as well. There's a 2 week break for the holidays too. Winter is such an odd term.

I took Conflict Management and Resolution with Hebbard in the Spring 2022 term. I would recommend it, and him. It is the only course that I took that fits into your degree plan.

I think you are right - I think I was confusing Paul with Johnson. I can't keep it together today. For my degree I have to take 12 credits of counseling electives (MS Family Studies) so that's why I was asking about the CSL courses. I'm reading through the syllabuses right now for each course and I'm def not afraid of the work. I work FT and have ben taking 2 courses for the last 2 semesters but I struggle with writing papers so that's my worry.

I think I may print out the syllabuses of the classes that interest me, put them up against each other and see what work is due when. I didn't do that last semester and it was pretty brutal having to do 2 exams in one week and then a paper and exam another and then the following week and exam and a paper!  My head was spinning.

I personally like Conflict Resolution with Dr. Hebbard. I feel lucky to have gotten him. I had to this course this term. It's one of my required courses and this is my last term. I find his approach to this topic to be really helpful. The papers are really reasonable. You do a great deal of self reflection and he wants that from you. No references. No citing. No discussions. No exams. I feel like I have gotten a lot out of this course and have somethings I want to learn more about on my own now. 

4 classes is making me lose my mind. I've had some serious things happen in my personal life during this term too so I'm ready for a break. I'm ready for this term to be over. I'm sick right now and I just want a vacation. LOL 4 classes with a light workload may be ok. But 3 of my classes have had assignments due every week. The 4th it's every other week. Sooooo much reading. Some of the classes aren't topics I'm interested in or I've taken them already so I find them boring which doesn't help with the assignments and reading. I would not take 4 classes in a term again. Nope. I wouldn't recommend it either. 

I haven't done the winter term, but it seems so odd to me. 2 weeks of classes then a 2 week break. I wouldn't want a class with an exam because you have to go back so far to try to remember those first 2 weeks. I have talked to someone who did it and he said it was rough. He works full time so I can imagine throwing the holidays in there, it's a challenge. Some professors do let you work aheads. Others won't. I have a class right now that opens each week. We've had to wait until Monday a few times for the professor to open it for the week. I'm like come on! I need to know what my work is this week as I need to plan my week out. That I find really frustrating. With classes that have the chapters listed in the syllabus you could read over the break and get ahead on that. Your schedule sounds harsh! Back to back exams and papers can be really rough. My exams have been open book, but they are not easy. I have two this term that have a time limit - 35 questions in 65 minutes. That was nerve wracking. 

Dr. Palmer teaches management courses so if you have open electives you could take one of her classes. Did you take ethics yet? I'm in HBD6776 right now. I know that class rotates professors.

I emailed Dr Hebbard and he said he only teaches that class in the fall so I'm waiting for the fall to take it. Everyone says such favorable things about him.

I'm emailing professors ahead of time asking if the course is wide open to work at my own pace so that's what I'm going to choose based on their answers. I'm really hoping to do 2 more this semester because work slows down for me.

Not sure how you still have your mind right now with all these courses! I'm leaving for vacation in a week and a half and I've got 2 responses to discussion questions to do (which I KNOW I'll be doing on vacay because this class has people who write their crap the day it's due - so annoying that I'll be on vacation doing this). Can't wait until we can close the books on this semester!!!!
