They do right now. They might not after July.

I sent an email to TESU Advising about this idea of dual BACS & BSBA CIS degrees, and I just received this response from a supervisor in the Academic Advising department:

"As you will read in the Award of Degree policy, the two Areas of Study within one degree has a restriction on overlap within the Area of Study.  This can create complications and makes the process a bit more confusing.  I think earning two distinct degrees is easier to explain to an employer and looks more professional.  The downside of two degrees, is you would have to complete the first one and graduate before starting the second one, and you would need 24 new credits in the area of study, which are earned after the completion of the first degree.  (Even though you are not technically starting the second degree, you are earning credits which would apply to the second degree.  For example, we wouldn’t make you repeat General Education courses, such as SOS-110)."

I was under the impression that this was wrong information, and that the two degrees could be completed simultaneously. It sounds like the CS electives could not also be used for CIS AOS and Professional courses because he is saying that they must be earned after the first degree is earned.

Does anyone have any actual experiences or information that is different from this?

I have received evaulations and information from TESU Advising department in the last four days. All of these classes still transfer as follows:

SDC MATH 108 Discrete Math transfers as TESU MAT 270 Discrete Math
SDC CS 105 Operating Systems or SDC CS 305 Advanced Operating Systems both transfer as TESU COS 240 Operating Systems
SDC CS 306 Computer Architecture transfers in as TESU COS 330 Computer Architecture

Advising is correct, you need 24 different credits in the second degree, you can have 9 credits overlapping in the AOS and I would recommend following the BACS and BSBA CIS degree entirely. There really isn't a downside as you only need to take about 5 courses extra. The reason is, you have 24 credit difference in the AOS - the BSBA has the professional business requirements and the CS has other Computer Science/Math requirements, and that's the end of the story... Easy right?!

I am confused also.  I thought if you wanted dual degrees, you needed to graduate them both at the same time?  Not graduate one first and then go back for the other (which is what is sounds like the TESU advisor is saying).

Did you ask to have the 2nd degree added to your plan or just did you ask how it would work? Because the advisors frequently give bad advice. They often don't know their own policies.

Rachel - what is the best thing to do? My son is going for the dual degrees in CIS and CS. He's currently working through the CIS degree first (because that was recommended on the forum. Although some of the classes he's taken apply to the CS degree).
If you make TESU aware that you are planning on graduating both degrees at the same time, will they put up both degree plans for you? Or do you need to complete one before they add another?

Is he fully enrolled? If so, simply email advising and say "I would like to have Computer Science added to my degree plan. I do not want to remove the BSBA CIS." They may come back and give you some nonsense about getting both degrees at once to be impossible or whatever. If that happens, ignore the warnings and claim that you're still deciding, but you want both plans on your account to help you decide.

If he's not enrolled yet, he really should be. It'll help keep track of classes and ensure that he's not stuck if they suddenly decide to stop accepting a class that he's already taken. That doesn't happen often, but it can happen.
