I failed Lib-495 - Yikes!
#1
I'll make this quick. I just failed Lib-495 with Prof. Michele Herrera.

First off, I'm not a smart student at all and I'm not mentally well. An assignment that would take most students 4 hours to complete would take me around 12+ hours. My mentor was actually great! She wasn't helpful in regard to the assignments, but she was super nice.

Where I went wrong....

I registered for another class along with the capstone. The course load was way too much for me. As others on this forum have suggested, I would take the capstone by itself if at all possible. I failed the capstone because I turned my final assignments in exactly 22 hours after the "deadline". My mentor refuses to accept them, as I assume she's already sent off the grades... I probably won't finish my bachelor's degree because of this failure, but hopefully someone can learn from my mistakes.

The class itself is not hard, it's just extremely time consuming. I spent over 30 hours on my capstone project, which was intense. For those taking the class in the future, I would suggest getting your work done early and taking the course by itself.

Good luck!

Oh please don't give up! I would contact TESU about retaking the capstone. Don't give up! You have 1 last class to get your degree. I know this sucks. It really does. But don't give up! You've come so close!!!!

I wouldn't give up either, ask for an extension.

I have turned in late assignments before, sometimes they take off a few points, and sometimes they don't.

Less than 24hrs late, how did the professor even grade all the capstones that fast?

This is the TESU late policy:

https://tesu.smartcatalogiq.com/current/...0is%20late

If she's not following the school policy, I would escalate to the dean.

EDIT: Just realized this paper might have been due the very last day of the term, in which case she IS following policy, as nothing can be accepted after that final day.

If your mental health issues are documented, I would apprach TESU and explain that it was difficult because of, you never told them so they could do a formal accommodation plan and embarrassing. However here you are. See if they will work with you.

Certificate for the Study of Capitalism at University of Arkansas finished July 2022

MBA with Hellenic American University started March 29th, 2021 , finished May 20th 2022, Graduated in June 2022

BSBA at Thomas Edison State University started May 21st 2020 with Sophia and SDC, finished Jan 24th, 2021, Graduated on 12 March of 2021

Total time to complete both degrees 2 years exactly, total cost just a small bit over $10,000

Thanks Degreeforum!

I don't care if 20 of us here on DF need to call up TESU asking that this person be given a break.

We can't let this person fail like this.

Failing a class doesn't mean you're not smart. It only means that you're not smart when it comes to essays. You're almost certainly smarter than I am about some things, just as I'm probably smarter than you about other things. Don't beat yourself up over failing one class! As others have suggested, I would definitely contact TESU to see what can be done. If nothing else, I would hope that they would at least allow you to retake the class. It would suck having to do another 30+ hours of work on another capstone project, but at least you now know the course workload so hopefully you'd be able to manage your time better. Also, you wouldn't have that other class bogging you down.

Would they have to do an entirely new project? If they have to retake the course, surely they would be allowed to used the old paper.

OP I would definitely reach out and see if there was anything that could be done. You’re too fricking close to just let it go without trying to talk to everyone you can.

Don’t accept this as a defeat. It’s just a pothole in this long journey you’ve taken. I failed the Capstone at COSC twice because of life events. I just got readmitted after having to plead why I should be allowed a third try to the Provost. It sucked and was slightly embarrassing, but I’m still doing the damn thing. Just pivot to the new situation at hand and keep moving.

Try and plead your case with the Provost, Registrar, EVERYONE. If the answer is that you still failed find out what that means for the next time you take the class. Do you need a new project? Do you need to follow the same deadlines or can you just turn in your old completed project and be done?

It sucks. Hard. But just don’t stop moving my friend. Remember, we’re sharks in this game. Keep swimming, stay hungry, and keep your eyes on the prize. You can do this.

Unfortunately or fortunately (whichever side of the fence you’re on) policy is policy. How do you make exceptions for one and not another ? I know someone who was kicked out of a nursing program with 2 semesters to go because they fell below 76% in a course, not the final grade of the course. But fell below it during the course. Their average was a 75.6% for this particular course about midway through it. She had to wait a full year for the course to come back around to retake. Extreme ? I think so, but it was policy.

Wallace: You've come this far already in a way to earn degrees that requires considerable individual planning and initiative.

You've succeeded earning more undergraduate credits than most people with bachelor's degrees. You've demonstrated your proficiency in a wide range of subjects including arts and technology, through several delivery formats. You've succeeded in Charter Oak's cornerstone which is similar to a liberal arts capstone, and in 11 of 12 weeks of TESU's liberal arts capstone.

In this past week 12 the time wasn't right for you. But you are competent and accomplished and by all evidence here you are smart. You will chalk up this next success of completing your bachelor's degree when the time is right for you.
