2 Distance Doctoral Programs in Portugal

I was thinking of doing this one in the future:

PhD in Complexity Sciences (ISCTE and University of Lisbon / Portugal)

3700 euros for the 3 years. It´s "blended", but I was already confirmed that we are only required to do a one week residence per year, during the 2nd and 3rd years, and only IF the COVID situation allows it.

Another option I was considering was:

4400 euros for the 3 years. It´s totally elearning, since that university is totally online.

I know by a professor at the University of Lisbon, that they have at least one professor at the business school, with a PhD from the Universidade Aberta, so it´s not a problem to have a distance learning doctoral degree, in order to teach in Portugal.

University of Lisbon, ISCTE and Universidade Aberta are all universities owned by the government of Portugal.

I understand that it´s all of them, they also require a bachelor´s GPA of at least 13 in the Portuguese scale.


In the end, they sum all your points:

Yes, that´s true.

When I did my Master at the University of Lisbon, they allowed me to answer all the questions in all the exams in English, and I wrote my master´s thesis in English too.

I sent an email to the Universidade Aberta to see if the Doctoral thesis could be done in English, but they didn´t even answer. I wrote to 2 or 3 of the people mentioned in the website.

"As an emerging approach to research, complexity science is a study of a system. It is not a single theory, but a collection of theories and conceptual tools from an array of disciplines (Benham-Hutchins & Clancy, 2010; Paley & Gail, 2011). For example, complexity science has been taken up in both natural (i.e. mathematics) and social sciences (ecology), and has become increasingly popular in health care literature. Complexity science is concerned with complex systems and problems that are are dynamic, unpredictable and multi-dimensional, consisting of a collection of interconnected relationships and parts. Unlike traditional “cause and effect” or linear thinking, complexity science is characterized by nonlinearity. According to Miles (2009), complex systems and problems require more than simplistic linear thinking. Regarding requirements, yes, it seems like they don´t worry much about specific requirements, one of their graduates was an economist with a MBA, and other was a Bach. in Education with a concentration in Physical Education (not sure if you call it "physical", it´s the sport´s teacher) with a Master in Psychology.

The teacher´s PhD thesis was: "Complex Networks Analysis in Team Sports Performance: Multilevel Hypernetworks Approach to Soccer Matches", the economist´s PhD thesis was: "Interbank Networks and the Benefits of Using
Multilayer Structures".

The journal article based on the teacher´s dissertation was called:

"What’s next in Complex Networks? Capturing the concept of attacking play in invasive team sports.", from the abstract:

"In this article, we propose a novel approach to team sports performance centered on sport concepts, namely that of an attacking play. Network theory and tools including temporal and bipartite or multilayered networks were used to capture this concept. We put forward eight questions directly related to team performance to discuss how common pitfalls in the use of network tools for capturing sports concepts can be avoided. Some answers are advanced in an attempt to be more precise in the description of team dynamics and to uncover other metrics directly applied to sport concepts, such as the structure and dynamics of attacking plays".
