What do you think?  Should that be hyphenated?

University awards micro-credentials demonstrating skills employers want : University of Dayton, Ohio (udayton.edu)

OPINION: Microcredentials will become prevalent — maybe even preferred (hechingerreport.org)

Well, if you don't mind an opinion from someone completely ignorant of the actual topic: it is much easier to read with the hyphen.

However, the prefix "micro" doesn't seem to use a hyphen very often. For example, Microscope, Microbrew, Microphone, Microprocessor, and Microwave are some very common words; none of them use a hyphen, yet they are quite readable.

So if it becomes a well known word in ordinary conversations, I guess the non-hyphenated version will win out.

Brilliant! We've dissected the hyphen and we've completely missed the educational aspect and impact of the whole topic. Great! Pass those PhDs around. We all get one apiece... for our great service to mankind! :-(

Indeed he has! How did you find out I'm known as:

Seine Selbstgefälligkeit, Johann VI, Graf von Biersaufen und Wurstburg.
His Smugness, Count Johann VI of Beerchugging and Sausageville.

PhD's for everybody? Certainly! The Elves print them up at my private University in the Black Forest. - Die Alte und Freie Universität von Johann.  Smile

Now - do you esteemed members agree with this view that micro-credentials (Okay - hyphen) are becoming that big a thing? Do you see a big future for any specific ones? Any specific issuers? Any specific industries or occupational areas?

There is an ongoing debate as to the purpose of universities.  Do they exist in order to educate people generally or should they be the training ground for the corporate world.  Of course, it's not a black or white situation, a middle ground exists and I think that microcredentials (I'm going without the hyphen) are a way that universities can 1) make some money and 2) show some responsiveness to the needs of the business world.  Soon they will become like an MBA, every school in the world will have microcredentials just as they all now have online MBA programs.  They will continue to expand but they will never dominate.
