Cybersecurity Degree Question
#11
I seem to recall a person or two posting that they'd gotten a cyber security degree with alt credits. Possibly utilizing TEEX and various certificates? It's not a degree that interests me personally so I never really looked into it.

B.S. Cybersecurity and Information Assurance

but if you have zero experience with networking and have done nothing more than dabble with python and sql then you shouldn't do it

instead you should do one of these from WGU
B.S. Cloud Computing
B.S. Network Operations and Security
B.S. Computer Science

that I would like to see
please post a list of alternate credits that apply to a cybersecurity at TESU
https://www.tesu.edu/ast/programs/bs-cybersecurity

Yeah that's what I was thinking after reading about WGU's Cyber IA program. The description of the program states it's mainly for people with an IT background/experience and that doesn't describe me at all lol.

Perhaps I shouldn't pursue since I have no idea how to print out TESU's academic evaluation report through their online Student WebAdvisor site. I looked at the amount of credits they will accept for three programs so far:

BA in CS
SH applied to degree: 77
SH remaining: 43
SH to be planned: 27

BS in Cyber
SH applied to degree: 55
SH remaining: 65
SH to be planned: 59

BS in IT
SH applied to degree: 61
SH remaining: 59
SH to be planned: 43

Ouch. 65 SH remaining for Cyber! The BA in CS remaining looks a lot better but it requires calculus and discrete math. Math is probably my weakest subject but I think I could get through it, maybe. Would SH remaining influence your answer as to what degree to pursue? I'm not sure how my transfer credits apply to WGU's degree programs as I have yet to send in all my transcripts to them.

Here's what I would have to complete for the BS in Cyber through TESU. I'm really interested in some of these classes (Database Programming, Linux, Ethical Hacking, Digital Forensics). I can't wait to get started! Now I just need to figure out how to satisfy these courses the fastest/cheapest way possible and prepare myself for a huge salary decrease once/if I start in my future cyber job lol.

Last time i ve heard most SDC cybersecurity courses were not transferable to TESU. Maybe something changed but i didnt see anything here for some time

Check out option of certifications as a credit transfer. TESU had list of certifications they will accept as credit. CEH, Comptia are definitely there.

Oral Communication  ENG-202   - Study.com Presentation Skills in the Workplace OR Sophia's Public Speaking for free.

Quantitative Literacy  MAT-121      - Sophia, free until the end of the month

Information Literacy  SOS-110  - no replacement, must take at TESU

Ethical Leadership     PHI-286  - Sophia, free until the end of the month. I highly recommend running through Greek Philosophers first, though. It'll only take you a couple of hours and it'll make Ethics MUCH easier.

SDC has 2 database courses. Those might work for your requirements. Someone else would know better. https://study.com/directory/school/Thoma...ransferTab

I think the TEEX free courses slot in there somewhere, but I'm not sure where. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Fr...ersecurity

There's a networking TECEP: https://www2.tesu.edu/tecep.php?CourseCode=CMP-354

There are different certificates you can transfer in: https://www.tesu.edu/academics/oplr/plr#info-technology

Thank you!! This is awesome info. Time to sign up for Sophia before I have to pay, should have kept up with this forum. I could have taken Sophia courses this whole time while I've been bored out of my mind working from home. I'll take your advice on Greek Philosophers first too, philosophy really interests me. I'm a super nerd.

They sent an automated email about taking a Cyber Aptitude Assessment. It's used to determine fit for entry-level cyber roles with Booz Allen and eligibility for cyber training opportunities like the Cyber Core Tech Excellence program. I think this is the program: https://www.learningtree.com/bahcybercore/

There were two parts to the assessment. The first part was mainly questions about personality, work ethic, work preference, etc. The second part was a lot of pattern sequence questions. There were blocks of pictures with one of them blank and I had to pick an option that shows the correct sequence. Another part was pictures of fans with codes that turned them on, off, etc. I feel like I did really well on the sequence part, hopefully the personality part too. I haven't spoken to anyone about the program yet, I'm waiting to see how I did first. I'm not sure how those sequence questions can give insight into a candidate's aptitude for cyber other than being able to recognize patterns lol.

Doesn't look like the assessment is something you can for but their cybercore sends you straight to Sec+, so that is a good sign.  Study.com courses are on Cyber but none are on the transfer guide.

You might as well take Intro to IT from Sophia as well if you don't already have a CIS-107 equivalent. If it turns out that you have to switch to Computer Science instead of Cybersecurity after all, it'll be good to have taken that one. If you have even a halfway decent familiarity with computers, Sophia's Intro to IT should be pretty easy to pass.

ASU has Programming for Everyone: Introduction to Programming starting on August 18th that comes into TESU as COS 111. I don't know if this would replace ITS-150: Computer Programming I, but it's worth checking out. At the very least, it costs nothing to sign up for the class right now. So, if it turns out it doesn't fit into your degree plan, you can drop it and not be out of pocket any money.

How do you figure out whether or not a course replaces/satisfies another? I completed The Institutes Ethics course but I guess I'll have to do the ethical leadership course. For the Oral Communication/ENG-202 requirement, Sophia's Public Speaking course TESU equivalency is COM-209. Does the COM-209 course really satisfy the ENG-202 requirement? Also, how do I figure out if an IT cert fulfills a course? I think if I could figure out how to check for equivalencies I could figure out how/where to satisfy course requirements. It doesn't seem as though a lot people have gone through the cyber BS degree from TESU. I was hoping to be spoon fed/given a detailed degree plan lol.

There are a couple of people on here who amazingly keep track of just about everything (dfrecore is one of them) and are able to make you a more customized plan. The prefixes (COM/ENG/ITS/CYB/etc.) don't necessarily mean much in terms of what will fall where. This is why Public Speaking comes in as COM-209 but will satisfy the oral communication requirement (ENG-202).

Outside that, you have to contact your advisor and/or simply transfer a class in and see where they put it. The advisors aren't always correct, unfortunately.
