Excelsior - NYU Foreign Language Exam?
#1
I'm thinking of taking the NYU Foreign Language Exam, does anyone know how it works? Do you have to go to NYU to take the exam? Whats on the Exam?

Also, does anyone know how many credits Excelsior awards for this exam? Any Upper-Level Credits? Minimum Score?

Thanks

I took French CLEP for 12 credits and the ACTFL OPI also in French for another 12 credits.

CLEP is reading and understanding, ACTFL OPI is conversation (mostly speaking)

CLEP has:
Spanish
French
German

ACTFL has many language they test on, up to 12 credits (ACE reviewed) see ACTFL Article

ON ACTFL OPI

The cost of the exam was $200, took 30 minutes on the phone (I had to bring a calling card as the number to dial was long distance, located in New York State I beleive)

My proctor was an Administrative Assistant in a Canadian Community College.

Signup is at: LTI, Inc. Online Application

Regarding Approval from Excelsior:
Quote:Hi

In regards to the French exams (CLEP and ACTFL). They will not duplicate. The ACTFL is covering the oral/speaking piece of the foreign language and the CLEP exam covers the written and listening pieces of the foreign language.

I hope this information is helpful. Please review and if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Thanks ZeFrench, but I was looking for information specific to the NYU Foregin Language Exam.

I just recvd an e-mail from Excelsior about it, let me share it with you all:

Quote:Good Morning Daniel and thank you for your inquiry to Excelsior College.

Please note that this is not course approval, but information regarding the NYU Language Proficiency Examinations. To receive course approval towards one of our degree programs, you must be an enrolled student.

The NYU Foreign Language exams have a few versions - 16 credits and 12 credits and both will be a combination of Upper Level and Lower Level.

For the language exams, a score of 1-12 will earn students that same number of lower-level credits. Scores of 13-16 will earn students 12 lower-level and 1 to 4 upper-level credits. These examinations fulfill requirements in Humanities, World Language and Literature concentration in the Liberal Arts, and the language requirements for the International Business concentration in Business.

For additional information, please contact NYU:

If I may ask, what interest you in those specific exams instead of ACTFL OPI.

To tell you the truth i've never heard of ACTFL OPI. A friend recommended the NYU Foreign Language Exam, so thats the one I was looking into. Do you know which is said to be easier?

ACTFL OPI is speaking, and done via the phone, thus that was easier to arrange.

My mother tongue is French thus I cannot gauge how hard it was, basically, be preparred to speak for 30 minutes, explaining yourself, and answering deep questions:
  • Where do you think you will be in 10 years time
  • Where is the economy headed
  • What are your thoughts on Outsourcing

These are the type of questions I received.

You get credits on a graded scale, as per the link above, depding on your verbal fluency.

There is nothing written or reading in this exam, oral only

Zefrench: Thanks for this awesome info. I studied intensive Chinese in Beijing for one year and could not find a way to test out after I came back. I'll try the ACTFL OPI exam but I'm not sure how I can get credits for reading/writing since there is no CLEP for this. It's worth getting some credits for anyway. Thanks again!!! Hopefully I'll be able to test in 10 days time.
Passed so far:
CLEP:
A&I Lit - 6 credits
Freshman Comp-6 credits
Eng Comp w/Essay-6 credits
Sociology-3 credits
Principle of Mgmt-3 credits
French - 12 credits
Human Growth & Dev- 3 credits
Humanities-6 credits

DSST:
Principle of Supervision- 3 credits
Env & Humanity - 3 credits
Intro to Computing - 3 credits

FEMA/FCC: 16 credits
UMUC-22 credits
