TESU BALS Degree Plan Help
#11
Thank You lewis.yim,

I will PM my email address over to you - I appreciate the discount.  I haven't done the arithmetic, but I should have the 100 hours needed for the waiver.

allvia,

The ethics course is complete and updated in the attached spreadsheets - just need to add to the ACE transcript (currently awaiting a password reset email, been a while...).  Thank you for the heads up!

Question - I read that the Institute's free ethics course is only good for 2 credits.  Is the wiki current in that TESU will likely waive the 1 credit difference and relocate that requirement as an additional 1 credit gen elective need?

You need to make up the 1 credit in the AOS, if you go BS Tech Studies you already have plenty of credit to make it up. If you go BSBA here is the 1 credit (for FREE!) that will make it up - Sophia's Developing Effective Teams https://www.sophia.org/online-courses/de...tive-teams

EDIT: And you will be able to use Study.com for at least a few of your courses you have listed on both BS Tech Studies or BSBA - so it is a membership well advised, plus lowers your residency waiver fee by hundreds.

Jon, I reviewed your template and the evaluation post - Here are my recommendations
Create an action plan/time schedule before you subscribe to SL or Study.com
I would do a month of Study.com or SL, and pause/cancel the subscription, and work on the other.
The work you do will not be affected, when you renew the subscription, it will continue where you left off.

English Comp II - Study.com
College Algebra - ALEKS
Information Literacy - Study.com Library Science 101
Diversity - SL/Study.com Cultural Anthropology (I prefer SL for fast)
Ethics - Free Ethics 312 (Not the 311 or the $5 CEU, it's the Free version)
Civic Engagement - SL/Study.com American Government (I prefer SL for fast)
Higher Level Math - ALEKS Trigonometry
Statistics - ALEKS Stats (any one of the three options), if this course is taking a long time, do the SL Business Stats

General Ed (Missing .067 credits) - 1 credit from Sophia, Essentials of Managing Conflict (comes in as Sociology 1 credit)
Chemistry I - StraighterLine/Study.com
Chemistry I Lab - StraighterLine or Ed4credit
Physics I - Study.com
Physics I Lab - StraighterLine
Physics II - Study.com
Physics II Lab - community college if they offer one credit lab or at TESU

Project Management - Study.com Project Management
TESU BS Tech Studies Capstone - At TESU of course!
Note: The Sophia course - Developing Effective Teams is 1 credit, used for any missing free electives

1) First Finish ALEKS, Ethics, Sophia Managing Conflict & Developing Effective Teams
2) Do not sign up for Study.com until the above is done, each month you have 2 exams minimum
3) Sign up for Study.com and complete Library Science, Project Management in one month or less

For Study.com, If you have more time, then take another course and finish quickly for $70/extra exam
Note: You may want to decide taking SL vs Study.com if you want to finish those courses "faster/easier".
SL's system is somewhat slow when you log into it, but once you're in, you can "control F" to find the answers in the open textbook.

Sweet!  That is a lot of help!

So, here's the plan as I understand it (updated spreadsheet attached):

1. Complete The Institute's ethics course (Done. Awaiting ACE credit)
2. Complete via ALEKS by 7/31
     A. College Algebra
     B. Trig
     C. Intro to Stats
3. Check with local CC for 1 credit Physics II Lab and dates to enroll
4. Complete Sophia 1 credit course
5. Complete SL/Study.com courses and waive cornerstone
6. Apply for Capstone
7. Complete Physics II Lab sometime after Physics II course
8. Submit ACE transcript
9. Finish Capstone
10.Apply for graduation/Pay Residency waiver

Am I on-point with this?

Thanks Again,
Jon

Step 1 is get TESU to add an official evaluation for the BS Tech Studies - what you posted appeared to be the What If tool results, you want it official to make sure things fall where you think they will - especially for such a degree as the BS Tech Studies.  You just need to email them and ask to have it added. It usually only takes a few days.

The Sophia course for this degree is not the one I posted about for the BSBA - but one called The Essentials of Managing Conflict    https://www.sophia.org/online-courses/th...g-conflict

bjcheung77 posted for you to take the following, but you only need a combination of this to meet the Physical & Natural World (8cr).

Chemistry I - StraighterLine/Study.com
Chemistry I Lab - StraighterLine or Ed4credit
Physics I - Study.com
Physics I Lab - StraighterLine
Physics II - Study.com
Physics II Lab - community college if they offer one credit lab or at TESU

It is possible you may be able to fill the requirement with the Chem I w/lab and the Pyhsics I w/lab.  Here is the thread where a member posted they were able to meet it with both level I courses - I just posted asking frank.f.franky if he was able to indeed get it met, hopefully he'll see it and respond (or others that were able to recently) https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...om-CHE-111

Now if bjcheung77 suggested the other science w/lab because you will still need another 4 credits in Gen Ed there are other ways to get them much easier - I have heard Study.com has a basic math that comes in as 4 credits, but there are many other easier options than a science w/lab for gen ed 4 credits.   Have the official TESU Eval done will allow us to know exactly what they want from you - and in the end it is what they want, they'll get.

Thank You allvia,

I have requested both a Cornerstone waiver based on quantity of transfer credit and an official evaluation for the BS in Tech Studies - good call!

I have completed the conflict management Sophia course, and will be starting on ALEKS tomorrow, in order to knock those three math courses out this month.

Really interested to hear if I can take the level 1 Chem and Physics labs - that would be great, but worst case is not too bad.

lewis.yim, I received your PM and will use your referral after the official eval and ALEKS are completed.

Thank you all for the tremendous help is planning this degree path! I figure I'll just continue to update this thread as I go, for accountability purposes.

I've heard for years that you have to take either Physics I & II, or Chem I & II - you can take Physics I & Chem I, that won't work. But maybe they've changed the requirements. It would be unusual.

It's a bummer that Study.com offers Physics II, but there isn't an inexpensive lab course for that. Rio Salado has Chem I & II as stand-alone lab courses, while their Physics courses include the lab. I wonder if you could contact them directly and see if they had a lab-only option.

frank.f.franky did respond to my inquiry on https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...om-CHE-111 and basically it has not been worked out, so we still do not know if a Chem I and a Physic I will meet the criteria or if you need what I and dfrecore have always been led to believe (by TESU) is that you need Chem I & II w/labs OR Physics I & II w/labs.

Don't take the Chemistry I - StraighterLine, it has been down graded by TESU which is most unfortunate (see the same thread listed above for more on that).  I personally would recommend completing a I & II (same subject) through a CC - series sciences like these tend to be easier to complete if you take them through the same provider (as they tend to pick up on II where I left off).

If your local CC does not have a good option for you, or is not bargained priced. Check out Clovis CC (NM) http://www.clovis.edu/ , New Mexico Jr College http://www.nmjc.edu/ (or pretty much any NM state school for out-of-state students online courses very low costs)  - I know that Rio Salado (AZ) gets recommended here often as well (I have not used them myself), although far more costly then the other two NM schools for non AZ residents http://www.riosalado.edu - but they do offer both subjects I & II w.labs starting this fall.   I'm quite sure that you've missed the summer sessions for these subjects.

If you do need Gen Eds you may look into taking Chem I and a Physics I (at the same time, since you can't take the II of one while taking the I) and see how they transfer in - you might just get lucky and they end up meeting the requirement. No risk on lost credits if you would have needed those credits to fill Gen Eds anyway.  You'll know where you actually stand once the official BS Tech Studies eval is posted for you by TESU - be sure to let us know so we can advise, sometimes you need to ask them to 'move things around (we'll know what those things are).

EDIT: Physics I w/Lab - StraighterLine is an option as well for level I in the subject (could be done now, no waiting to start).   Anyone know of a Chem I w/lab that will now meet TESU Chem I w/lab requirement that could be completed self-paced (now that SL has been downgraded)??? - you may want to post this question in it's own thread or tack it onto the one above.

The nice thing about Rio Salado that the other schools don't have is rolling starts.  They pretty much start every Monday.  And, with many courses, you can also choose an 8-week or 16-week option.  The other schools are going to have your regular old Semester-based system, with 16-week courses that only start at the beginning of the semester.  I personally would pay more to choose my start date and do an accelerated option.
