BS degree in fire science
#1
Hello all, I am helping a kid at work figure something out. He is active duty and wants to get a bachelor's degree in fire science. Ultimately he wants to become a Fire Marshall. Big questions i have are does he need a fire science degree and whats the best military friendly school to go through for it.

I don't have much to offer in the way of advice. But based on my own Navy experience (not sure which branch or mos your friend is) he should definitely try to get as much related fire training as he can while in the military.
1) it will be free
2)it's fun or at least a break from the usual day to day grind
3)make sure that training is on his JST and VMET and it will help tremendously in getting into a related occupation or college program

70% of EMS and Fire only have an AS degree. I would recommend he be an EMT and get an AS Fire degree. A BS degree will help. He should apply to attend a few National Fire Academy (NFA) courses in Maryland even if he needs to take leave to do it.

This is the best rankings of military friendly colleges. I have been to about 6 of them listed. Look for fire programs.

The US Fire Admin lists FESHE-recognized fire science degree programs by state. There are other Fire programs.

APU/AMU has a BA in Fire Science Management, or a BA in Emergency & Disaster Management - and both are available as either a regular degree program, or through their brand new Momentum Competency-Based program. The cost for the regular program for active-duty military is $250/cr. Momentum is $2,500 for a 16-week term, and there is no military pricing - you pay in full when you start a term.

APU/AMU also takes ACE credit, so your friend could bring in a LOT of credits (90 I think) to help offset the price - and if he took CLEP/DSST exams free through the military, he could cut the costs even more.

firehouse.com is a wealth of information on this topic....

I get emails about degree programs from them all the time, even though I only signed up to ask some questions about an air force scba system.
