For the online courses at TESU that I signed up for, do I really need to have both the textbook and solution manual? When I click the MBS Direct link for the TESU's bookstore, it says that both are required. They are pretty expensive. I wonder if I don't need the solution manuals. I am taking math courses.

Are you not taking those TECEPS? Or are you using up your TA for those math courses? I usually recommend taking the "UL" harder to find courses only at TESU, and the rest to transfer them in... Do you know what you're missing from the AA/BS Tech Studies?

Actually changed to ASNSM in Mathematics/BA Mathematics. I just haven't updated my degree plan. I am currently using TA as I don't want to pay for the residency requirement.
- I wasn't able to get the instructor billet that I am hoping for. Leaving Japan next year and headed to Great Lakes, IL.
- Not in a rush for AA/Bachelor's degree. I reenlisted recently for another 5 years so I have all this TA to used. I'm still looking forward on getting my AA by next year September/December.
Back to my question, are the solution manual books really required?

When I took Discrete Math I found the solution manual invaluable. Since you can't easily get tutoring, being able to try a problem, then see the actual solution (not just an answer) is nearly essential.

Heck yes, I would buy both the text and the solutions manual. However, never at retail price, if you can get them used at say Amazon or another book retailer, even better. For example, you mentioned it maybe $120 or whatever for a text or solutions manual, you can probably find a used one on Amazon or another provider and have it at 12 bucks used...
Update: As the example used by Davewill, I was able to find the two books - FREE.
So, yeah, don't skip out on the books... you should get them!

You can also rent for 4 months on Amazon for a fraction of the price to purchase.

My situation: I completely forgot to buy the books sooner as I've been busy at work taking care of requirements to go on leave in the Philippines. A lot of requirements for a military member to go overseas. The course starts on January 2. I will be on leave from Dec 28 - Jan 25. I know I can still take care of it while I am on leave. I read the syllabus and it says that the midterm/final exam is open book but it has to be a hard copy. I found a website where I can get the textbooks only as a pdf. Is it okay if I just print that off? If I buy a actual books now, it will be too late as I am located in Japan and I usually get my mails on my PO box in two weeks time frame even though I have the Prime.

The PDFs will be fine for general use during the course, but won't be useful during the midterm/final. Two weeks is probably fast enough to get it before the midterm, and you could start with the PDFs, but that has you buying the eBook AND a print copy.
