Post Grad employment stories
#1
Hi,
I did a few searches in this forum relating to what people have done with the degrees they have earned from these online schools in terms of employment.  I didn't have much success finding anything.  Do the graduates just move on from this forum once they complete their degrees, or am I not finding the right threads.

I graduate 9/15/17 from TESU and I am still active on the forum. Graduates generally remain active but they may start posting less as they aren't generally asking anymore questions and just helping people out. At least that is the case in my experience. Also I don't even have the degree in hand yet and I was offered a promotion that starts on the 21st of September pending my degree. So they are very useful, worth every penny to get. Hope this helps.

I think the posts are spread out. I've seen some mentioning employment in various threads about whether employers mind an online degree, threads about employers minding the lack of GPA, threads about resumes, etc.

I think that people generally write in their "I'm finished" thread if they got into a grad school, and if they finished grad school, they post about their employment.

Dina's story is simply awe inspiring: http://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/showthre...?tid=22207

For whatever reason, most people don't talk as much about what the degree did for their career. Maybe this thread will attract folks to talk about it. In my case, I already had a successful career, but got shut out of a couple of opportunities I wanted to pursue because of no degree. Before I finished I got a new job, so haven't really gone job hunting with the new degree as yet.

There are a whole bunch of stories on this forum, it is one of the reasons I got started is by reading these aspiring threads that actually built the momentum for me and kept me motivated to complete my degree. I've read some who have completed their Masters and others who have started their businesses...

I am not done with my Liberal Studies degree until September but.... It's already opening up so many doors for me. I live in CA and I work as a Substitute Teacher. I recently learned that by having a Liberal Studies degree it automatically checks a box for a TPSOL permit to long term sub in grades k-12 multiple subject and special education without having to have my transcripts evaluated. I also was told I would be eligible to be picked up by a school district and teach on a temporary credential because of this major. I was informed that the CSET exam is being waived for Liberal Studies majors if their course work meets the subject matter and if you are missing any courses you can take them at the local junior college and fill the courses in to waive it.

When someone posts, you can look at their stats which are displayed in the top right of their post. It shows when they joined, number of posts, etc. There aren't many of us who have been here longer than 5 years. People mostly move on but occasionally come back to say hello or ask a question. I LOVE when people I met here come back - you make connections with people here and it's fun to see how their lives are progressing. In real life, I've turned 3 long-time members here into face-to-face friends that I talk to often, and many more through social media/LinkedIn, etc.
The primary benefit of this group is helping with undergraduate, there is a better board for graduate questions - often referred to as the "sister" board, but I don't know that people necessarily leave here and go over there, but some keep the same screen name (I do, several others here do too) and so you'll recognize a few names.

There used to be a lot of information on graduates who moved on to grad school or better employment. Off the top of my head there was burbuja who completed a business degree and got into a tough and prestigious bilingual global MBA program in Mexico. (one year in Mexico, one year in US if I remember correctly)

There was also ryoder, who completed his first degree (BSBA CIS) quickly, then began an "MBA in Computer Science" (can't recall the school) that allowed him to work as quickly as he wanted. He rushed through that degree in about six months, and because he was bored he knocked out a few more classes on the side to qualify for a second degree at TESU at the same time. Then he went on to work on a PhD.

I believe a few others have gone on to PhDs as well, either forum members or relatives of them. Many others went to grad school, and I think at least one was accepted into law school.

To be honest, since this thread is about employment, bringing up graduate school sounds like deflection. A few people here have gone to semi-prestigious graduate schools, and that's kind of impressive, but just getting into any graduate school is not hard. Northcentral University will accept just about anyone into its doctoral programs.

Rebel100 finished his degree at COSC, completed an MBA at WGU, and received a promotion. Cookderosa completed a degree at TESU, finished a master's in nutrition, and I think she now has a nutrition-related job at a university. The job I have now with the government requires a bachelor's degree. I also used my degree to get a college teaching job. It was a horrible school that ultimately shut down, but it was a job I couldn't have gotten without a degree. I did get into a selective PhD program, but that has more to do with my GRE scores and GPA in my master's program.

That's.... odd. My point was merely that many others have gone on to do better after graduation, and presumably those who have are also in better positions as a result.
