Order on Applying for Graduation - TESU
#11
bricabrac Wrote:Consider this a dumb question, but has it been the bursar giving out different answers - or some usually clueless expressline rep? The bursar is the one who handles this type of thing.

It has come from all over the place - advisors, deans, bursar, etc. And no one really knew who to ask either, I suspect.

They say its good for a year but can I go get a second bachelors in that time or do I pay again. It doesn't specify. I am assuming according to the wording of the e-mail that it should work for a second degree within a years time.

If it's good for a year, what else would you do with it EXCEPT get another degree?

I was told it is good for 1 year from when it is paid - whether you apply for graduation in September or December or March etc - it is still good for 1 year BUT it is not good for multiple degrees. You have to pay the residency waiver for each degree you apply for UNLESS you are getting both degrees at the same time. So if you want an AA and BA that is ok. Even two BAs are ok. But they have to be conferred at the EXACT same time. If you apply for September graduation and then decide to add an extra 24 credits in the AOS for a second degree to be conferred at a later time you are going to have to pay it again. But if you decide you want to pursue that second degree and you've already applied for graduation you can ask them to put your application "on hold" until you finish the rest of the courses. In that scenario it will be good for one year and you can get both degrees at the same time for the same residency waiver. If for some reason you don't finish up in that 1 year you'll be stuck paying it again. I've asked advising, the 1-800 #, the bursar etc and gotten the same explanation each time so I feel that its safer to err on the side of caution and go with the 1 year/1 degree. If for some reason they don't charge for the 2nd degree I think you are just getting lucky. And I would assume that all this will change again. I asked a lot of questions when they changed the tuition and residency waiver fees on April 1st and I've asked again within the last couple weeks. That is not to say that next month or six months from now the explanation will be the same.

In my years at TESU the only department that handled tuition is the bursar, so I would not have even asked the question elsewhere. But if the bursar gave conflicting info, then yeah, that would be a problem.

This sounds fair to me. If the waiver offsets the residency requirement for the degree (ie 12cr AA, 24cr BA) then this makes perfect sense. Basically you are paying a specific dollar amount to get out of taking those number of credits at the college. And, you do not have to pay a separate annual tuition fee.

For those who have gone through a graduation audit, where can you access status? Do they just email you when it is complete? Or do I need to start checking at some point after July 1st somewhere on OSS?

I feel like we just need to sit back and wait. I know it tells me what day I applied (today) but as far as I know the only update I will get is the good to go or nope something is wrong

Yes, I see a date next to my name. But there doesn't seem to be any place except maybe in "Documents" where they would post something. I'm assuming it comes through on email. In the event I am missing something I would like to know the day they post or email vs. maybe a few weeks later if I don't know where to look.

Since I've never paid tuition here, and never applied for graduation before now, there's no way I would know that I couldn't ask an advisor about that. The bursar may "handle tuition" but that certainly wouldn't mean that others wouldn't know what was going on. AND, if I asked a question, and the person didn't know the answer, the best answer at that point would be "let me send you to the bursar's office, they handle those types of issues." Instead, they answer the question themselves.

And speaking of, how do you work at a school, where I'm sure you get asked this question all of the time, and NOT know the answer?? I mean, I'm pretty sure it would take a 30-second call to the bursar's office yourself to find out the answer, since the advisors DO know that the bursar is the one that answers these types of questions.

When I worked, I didn't just make crap up. I actually went to the correct person and ASKED them so I would know the right answer going forward!!
