Walking
#1
So my advisor pushed me to walk in spring of 2017 but i refused because it just didn't feel right having 5 classes left and walking. I will have all my classes done in fall of 2017. Would if be weird to wait around and walk in spring of 2018? How normal is this? Need some advice, thanks!

Nothing weird at all. "Walking" is essentially a celebration. It's like when people elope, then throw a reception later for all the people who couldn't be there. They are happy and want to celebrate with their loved ones. Graduation is at LEAST that big a deal. I would have felt exactly as you did, not wanting to be "honored" before I earned it.

Go ahead and walk!

Where are you getting your degree? Is that the earliest you can walk? It isn't really unusual. TESU only does their commencement in September so some people will have gotten their degrees almost a year earlier. A previous school I went to had theirs in June and December. People who had missed the June ceremony for whatever reason walked in December and vice-versa. You still earned the chance to walk. The question will be if you feel like celebrating so long afterwards. By then you might already be onto working or in grad school or wherever your next venture takes you. (But I agree, I would feel strange walking if I know I still had five classes left. I like the idea of it being something I already accomplished).

Is it protocol to come for graduation if you live clear across the country? Just wondering how people view this?

Wait if you want to Smile I would have trouble deciding because it does seem strange when you have 5 courses left.

Hopefully, I'll be graduating in September, but I live overseas. I am from about an hour south of Trenton and I won't be back home in September so I won't be able to walk this year. At some point in the future, I will make it a point to plan a trip home to coincide with the ceremony at TESU so I can walk. Who knows, it may be 5 years away haha. The only way I'll be skipping the TESU ceremony in the future is if I decide to do grad school and then I'll walk for that instead. Either way, I'll be celebrating a degree by walking in the ceremony at some point. I don't think it's weird at all to wait to do it much later.

I hope to be graduating in September, but I don't plan on going to the ceremony - it's across the country, and I can't imagine spending the money. It's just not a huge deal to me at this point in my life. If I had graduated from my first college straight out of HS though, I'm certain that I would have walked. But, I also would have known a whole bunch of people there, and it would have seemed important at the time.

I may have my husband and kids take me out to a fancy dinner or something though, to celebrate my accomplishment. cheersmate

thought this was an exercise thread

I'm reading the post and thinking "so what you have 5 classes left, that doesn't mean you can't take a walk and exercise or go hiking, you have lots of time to study,"

oh wait.. never mind
