Newbie looking for a little help
#1
I decided to go back to school after twenty years so I'm basically starting from scratch. I was going to go the traditional route and take the accuplacer and then attend my local community college, until I found this site. Ultimately I want to fulfill my core requirements, graduate with an associates degree from community college, and then transfer to a university (Nevada) to major in philosophy.

SL looks like a good start to get things going. They say the credits will transfer to my community college (TMCC). But once I decide to transfer to UNR, will they accept them as well? This is all pretty new to me so I'm trying to wrap my head around the best way to do this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Technically, yes. You might want to inform us which University it is that you want to ultimately attend as they may/may not accept ACE/NCCRS.
You should continue with your community college by transferring as much as possible to them and complete the Associates there. However..
That being said, the university may or may not take the ACE/NCCRS credits, you can review their webpage for more info.
On a side note, you can review the Beginners Guide sticky and also view the wiki at the following link: http://degreeforum.wikia.com

Someone here may be familiar with that school but my advice (since I am not familiar with the school) would be to ask them. The logical answer is that once the degree is conferred they should take that as satisfaction of courses complete. (Logically speaking, but they may not take the ACE credits). Also, it all depends on if they have a consortium agreement with the CC and what courses they consider Gen Ed vs. AOS. I attended a CC, got my Associates and TESU took everything I transferred. But because TESU had different Gen Ed requirements that I hadn't taken, I had a few to finish up. For example, my CC only required History or Government, not both so I took the history course. TESU specifically wanted either a Government or Poly Sci course for one of the categories so I had to take an American Government class. Not a really big deal, just something I ran into.

So, just like when you are planning to get a Master's from somewhere always work backwards. Look at what the transferring school wants and complete the requirements before you transfer in. For example, I know that WGU wants a certain set of History courses for their Social Studies Teacher Education program. TESU does not require I take all of them for my Social Sciences undergrad. But it isn't a bad idea to add them in before I graduate if that is the route I want to go. Or, I just need to take them at some point before I transfer there.

Your best bet is to check first with your CC to see if there's an Articulation Agreement with UNR, in which they will accept an AA/AS degree from TMCC, no questions asked, that will complete the first 60cr of the BA/BS you're seeking. If the answer is yes, then you should be good. If the answer is no, then you need to go to UNR and ask if they will accept the courses from SL on your TMCC transcript.

I do know that UNR accepts CLEP exams, as some DSST exams, so you definitely have that option. I might choose that over SL, just because it's a guarantee, and SL is not. They will take 60cr of testing, which is excellent.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP General and Subject) - University of Nevada, Reno - Acalog ACMS
Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) - University of Nevada, Reno - Acalog ACMS

It's interesting to note the following:
They will only take the College Comp WITH Essay CLEP, and that you have to get a 64 to get 6cr (but if you score 50-63, you get 3cr).
They will take the College Comp Modular w/o Essay CLEP, and give you 3cr.
They will only take the General Chem CLEP if you take a Chem lab course as well. And it only counts as 3cr.
They will only take 5 DSST Exams (Anthropology, Business Math, Public Speaking, Stats, & Tech Writing).

Also, they specifically will only grant ACE credit for Military: Non-collegiate Prior Learning Experiences

Thanks so much everyone. I am grateful for your time. I will update this thread to let you know what UNR says for future reference. ACE does have tmcc and unr listed as partnering colleges but I will check with them to make sure.

ACE is notoriously bad at having correct, up-to-date info. Also, UNR does list them as an option, but only for military. So if you're not military, you probably won't get them accepted.

I have spoken to and visited tmcc before, I like their campus and programs.
That being said, I reached out to them earlier this morning in regards to DSST transfer, waiting to hear back from them now. Unfortunately they do not have much info in their catalog about it.

Also the closest place for DSST is in Fallon Naval base or Sacramento.

On a side note i do belive tmcc is a pearson vue testing center. Excelsior tests are administered this way I think.

Also with straighterline, it seems like only a few courses will transfer out.

No word on NCCRS credits yet, nor have I looked at contacting anyone about it.

Honestly, sometimes, some schools just aren't a good "fit" for testing out. I would either rethink getting credits via testing out, or just go to a different school. I'm not sure a Philosophy degree at UNR will get you much, that you can't do better (and cheaper and faster) going the Big 3 route with a BALS and then getting a MA degree in something else later.

I also seems like you can test out of certain classes within tmcc itself
