Getting the run around from local colleges

Taking classes over makes no sense if your grades are C or better. You took those classes over elsewhere. Did you provide those transcripts to the two community colleges in question? If you've met the residency requirement at the other school and transfer credits from everywhere else, maybe you can graduate with what you have. If you can't get a straight answer, write an email to the chancellor or president. If you do this, you better present your case in a very succinct and organized manner.

Consult the general catalog of these two schools and find out what the rules are. When somebody tells you something stupid like retaking a course you have a C or better in, insist (in a manner that won't get you arrested) that the doofus shows you the justification in the general catalog.

Interesting thing about Athabasca and other Canadian Universities that I'm familiar with. Intro courses are numbered in the 200s and 2nd to 4th year courses are numbered in the 300s and 400s. Courses in the 100s are high school level. An American 200 level course would be at the same level as a Canadian 300 level course. Whether it would be recognized as such - who knows?

Athabasca's Bachelor of General Studies is a 3 year degree which may have limited acceptance in the US. There were and probably still are bachelors degrees in Canada earned with 2 years work. Some universities would grant a 3 year bachelors degree for 2 years of pre-med plus the 1st year of medical school or for 2 years of pre-law plus the first year of law school. It saves wasting 2 extra years earning useless degrees no-one cares about.

Athabasca is unique in that it is regionally accredited in the US as well as having Canadian accreditation.

So I spoke to the college that I have 15 hours with this morning. I was given a degree audit and was told I only need one class to graduate. So I guess their online degree audit is wrong. I'm still not sure I want to take a class with them. They are completely disorganized and I'm having problems with financial aid now. I'm also worried they will come back and tell me I have to take more classes once I finish what they tell me is my final class.

What course are they requiring? You may want to check whether the school accepts CLEP, DSST or ACE credits. You might be able to fulfill the requirement without having to actually take the course from them.

They're asking me to take a humanities/fine arts course. I think I have a choice of music, art history, ethics and theater. I've already taken art history and ethics but I'm not gonna argue with them about it. I'm still not sure what I should do. I'd to like to apply to some competitive colleges but I know they will want to see a years worth of courses since I've been out so long.

I learned from watching my son apply to an MBA program that one shouldn't make assumptions about what one will need to get in somewhere. He wanted to go to the local state college's MBA program, but was convinced he needed to spend a summer prepping for the GMAT and wait a year to apply. I convinced him to apply immediately and take the GMAT on a just couple of weeks prep. Worst case scenario, he doesn't get accepted and he can spend the summer prepping for a better score. Sure enough, six weeks later he was accepted.

I definitely would not delay applying to schools in order to fill some perceived need. I also wonder whether taking a bunch of extra coursework would really be that helpful. If the associate's is useful to your career or motivation, then go ahead and get it. If you're just doing it to "help" with admissions, I'd say just move forward with the bachelor's in a timely manner. It's really hard to recoup lost time.

I dropped out of college over a decade ago with 90 plus credit hours. While attending college in the past I took all of the classes needed to earn an associates degree. I recently decided that I would like to get that associates degree since I've already met the requirements for it. Unfortunately, all three of the local community colleges that I have applied to are asking me to take various humanities classes over again. I really have no desire to take these classes again. Can you folks tell me what schools would be a good option for me?

My mom had trouble receiving her associate degree in early childhood because of a math requirement also her school did not accept ACE credits. I advised her to transfer to Pierpont. Pieroont accepted all her credits including Aleks intermediate and college algebra. Now she will be graduating in may. Her transcripts reflects that she has completed her degree with an area of study in Early childhood studies. If you have 15 or more credits in one area you can have your transcripts reflect that. Also Pierpont accepts ACE credits. And there's no change for the degree. Totally free program. Call or email Mrs Nancy from the link and she will assist you.
