TECEP Abnormal Psychology
#1
I'm planning to take the TECEP Abnormal Psychology. The exam guide recommends 3 different texts : http://www2.tesc.edu/tecep_desc/PSY-350.pdf .
Is TESC suggesting that the candidate study all 3 texts or any of those 3? If it's any of those 3, which one would you recommend?

Also, for one of the recommended texts, the current edition is based on the DSM-V manual. Not sure if the TECEP is based on the DSM-IV or DSM-V...

I heard that UExcels are "harder" since they are constructed on one or two textbooks, whereas CLEPs are "easier" as they are more "general" - based on more than just a few books. How would TECEPs fare in comparison to UExcels and CLEPs?

From my experience with TECEPs, TESC's questions seem to be heavily drawn from the first text among other listed recommended texts. Unless TESC specifically advises that one buys/studies all texts ( as is the case with TECEP Marketing Communication http://www2.tesc.edu/tecep_desc/MAR-321.pdf where it reads:
Quote:Most college-level marketing communications textbooks will provide suitable preparation for this exam.
However, if you decide to use the texts listed below, we suggest that you use both. Marketing provides
excellent coverage of the marketing aspect of the marcom field, PROMO of the communications
aspect, and their combined price is less than most individual texts.
, I usually don't bother buying/studying all recommended texts. I go for the first on the list and it works for me.

I passed the TECEP for Abnormal Psych. I used IC (for the ECE) to study, along with a few flashcards I found online. However, there were a bunch of questions that seemed to be specific to the text. I still passed without the text, but I would probably get the first text listed if I had to do it again.

Clarify which DSM they are using. It matters, as there were quite a few DSM questions on the exam.

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.

I've contacted TESC... they replied that the TECEP is not specific to either DSM. For those DSM questions that you had, did it mention just "DSM" or "DSM-IV/V"? Now I'm seriously wondering if I should get the 16th edition or an earlier one...

Thanks for pointing that out! I checked the chapter breakdown of each book and found that the first abnormal psychology text listed is the closest match to the exam guide's content breakdown. Smile

This is my personal opinion, but I'd strongly suggest studying based on DSM 5. I have a feeling whomever told you that might not really be well informed. A lot changed between DSM-4 & 5. Considering that the sample TECEP questions seem to refer to DSM-5, I'd say its reasonable to assume that other questions on the test will be based off DSM 5.

Just noticed that. I checked the Online Course version, and found that the required textbook is the 15th edition. From what I've garnered via online reviews, the 15th edition (published about a year plus earlier) is based on the DSM-IV but includes comments on expected changes in the (at-that-time) to be published DSM-V. What do you think?

Would it be dumb for me to take this tecep if I haven't studied the book? I've gone through everything on study.com and scored an 84% on their practice test tonight. I ordered the book like two weeks ago and it was supposed to have like 2 day shipping. Finally talked to someone at amazon last night and they said they think it got lost in the mail and for me to reorder it.

It's my first tecep to get me enrolled with tesu on the per credit tuition plan, and I was just using study.com to help study for it.

My suggestion, based upon my own plan of action and experience, would be to take the study.com credit for Abnormal Psych, then use Psych of Women for the enrollment TECEP.
