Sociology Electives- TESU
#31
jsd Wrote:So all of those (other than the ones requesting more info) will count as soc electives, even the ones without "SOC" as the primary classification?

I do not believe that is the case they were not very clear in their first response. However, I did ask that very question alongside the additional information they requested so I guess we just gotta wait and see Smile

History
A couple of upper level history courses could help people. This is a somewhat popular program.

Psychology
This is a pretty popular program. Some people opt for the social science program since it's more flexible, and there aren't many affordable options for upper level psychology credits.

Computer Science
A lot of people opt for the BSBA in CIS because the computer science degree is too expensive to complete when paying out of pocket, but the BSBA is a business degree with a little information systems. It is not a good substitute for computer science. Discrete math, data structures, and linear algebra will make this degree easier to complete. Some UL computer science courses are also needed.

Information Technology
The BSAST in Information Technology has much of the same problems as the computer science degree. Computer architecture, database management, software engineering, and operating systems will make this degree doable. Plus, all of these courses can be used for the computer science program in addition to the BSBA in CIS and BA in Natural Science and Mathematics.

Natural Science
The BA in Natural Science and Mathematics is a flexible degree people opt for because it's too difficult complete the BA in Mathematics or Biology cheaply. Some people who want to major in computer science also opt for this program. However, it doesn't have many options for UL credits. UL biology credits will probably be the easiest to design and will probably draw more people than UL physics or chemistry courses. Immunology, virology, cell biology, UL genetics, and molecular biology are some common courses at universities. These could also help people complete a BS in Natural Science with a concentration in Biology at Excelsior or a BS in General Studies with a concentration in Biology at COSC.

Finance
The BSBA in Finance is one of the few business degrees at TESU that has a severe lack of options for the area of study. UL finance courses would be nice.

Science Labs
Some people need science courses with labs either for a degree at the Big 3 or as prerequisites for a graduate or health professions program. For the health professions, sometimes these courses have to come from a regionally accredited school, but sometimes they don't. Organic chemistry I and II, chemistry II, biology II, and physics II are some of the labs that don't have easy to find, affordable and flexible options. Standalone labs are better than labs offered with the courses since people can test out of biology I and II, chemistry I and II, and physics I and II without lab. Biochemistry without lab would also be nice. Also, most of TESU's BSAST programs require chemistry I and II with labs or physics I and II with labs.

Humanities
I don't believe there are a lot of options for UL humanities credits. You could kill two birds with one stone by offering religion courses that can be used for the humanities and religion programs.

Sociology
UL sociology credits, as evidenced by this thread, are hard to find.

WOW sanantone this is GREAT! Thanks for your suggestion. Tricia Smile

Here's a poll to show which courses would be most popular on this forum. Upper level CS/IT/IS courses are, by far, the most popular. The next most popular types of courses, currently, are upper level natural science and upper level finance.

Here's a quick update from TESU. I was told based on the list below they will only accept the following as sociology electives: Penn Foster Terrorism, CSU Race, Gender, Ethnic Relations, and Ed4Online Aging & Society. In regards to CSU Community Development and Working in Modern society I was told the Dean must approve of those two first and then they will get back to me. Everything else on the list will not be accepted. Nonetheless, that's not too shabby better then nothing lol.

There are 2 additional TCC courses to check out:

Sociology of Racial & Ethnic Groups
Studying Social Problems

They don't look to be UL, but it would be nice to have course equivalencies for them.

Yup you are correct Smile I did ask about a month ago about those two and they said they will accept them as LL courses however I was not told equivalents.

Did they rule out the two TCC courses counting as soc all together, or just not counting then until the course description is provided?

I provided the information they requested but sadly they still completely ruled out those two courses, this is what TESU said in the email:

"After researching the NCCRS database for the Tor Academy courses; SOC303 and SOC302, it appears that NCCRS has not reviewed the courses for credit. Therefore we cannot accept them as transfer credits."

They're not under tor academy, they're under Coopersmith Career Consulting in the NCCRS database.
Hopefully that's the only issue. I'd followup.
