Sociology Electives- TESU
#21
sanantone Wrote:Psychology
This is a pretty popular program. Some people opt for the social science program since it's more flexible, and there aren't many affordable options for upper level psychology credits.

To add to this, as I just finished this degree with TESU -- "Ethics in the Social Sciences" is one required TESU course that is currently not offered by any ACE credit-by-exam/alternative credit courses currently. This would help quite a bit.

Also, History and Systems of Psychology (required) is only available through Coopersmith Consulting (NCCRS), and it was a terrible setup and test. I would have gladly paid more than the approx $200 they charged to go a better route.

Likewise, Coopersmith Consulting is currently the only ones offering Physiological Psychology (another Pscyh degree requirement at TESU), and I imagine that setup would be similar to their History and Systems setup, though I don'thave experience with that (I took that as an online course elsewhere).

Offering Psych options is a win-win because it's a popular major and there are some gaps in it being more test-friendly. Obviously I'm biased, but I'd love to see more options.

UL sociology credits, as evidenced by this thread, are hard to find.

Okay, I'm biased here too since this was my Associate's "major," but this is also very under-served in the alternative credit world. Though I imagine there probably isn't as much demand for it like Psych or Business so I understand why we don't see as much. But if you wanted to venture in to it, again with TESU in mind...

The required course "Social Theory" currently has no options currently. It'd be great to see that. But as stated, UL elective options are especially lacking.

I was also thinking of UL credits in mathematics and music, but I don't know how popular those would be. We've only had a few people here major in music. IT, history, psychology, the various business subjects, computer science, and possibly humanities and natural science are popular programs or would be more popular if they were easier to complete. I forgot to mention criminal justice. COSC and Excelsior's programs were never test-friendly. TESU made its CJ program much less test-friendly (including ACE and NCCRS credits) recently. The main options for credits are Propero and Penn Foster. Almost everyone reports having a bad experience with Propero; Penn Foster often doesn't renew ACE evaluations for its courses. Communications would probably be more popular if there were more options.

Sanantone has some great suggestions!

My thoughts on History -- avoid UL courses like the History of Vietnam (since other ACP sources are covering that subject).

I love dfrecore's suggestion to partner with colleges like SL has done -- especially helpful on this forum would be the 3 most popular here: TESU, COSC, and Excelsior.

As for UL course ideas, it might be useful to look at TESU's current class offerings, as from what I've read, they are possibly more likely to consider ACE-approved courses as UL if their own course with similar content etc is UL.

Thomas Edison State University | Undergrad Course Offerings

and TECEP offerings probably do not need to be duplicated: Thomas Edison State University | All TECEPÂ Tests

This is a super exciting thread -- the need for more UL courses is pressing, and I'm so glad to see a small company taking the time to listen to students. And the thing is, here on the df, it's not just current students, but many of us are also parents of older children who may take the alternative credit route for at least some of their college-level learning, so there is potential for repeat customers Smile

Ed4Credit Wrote:Glad you got the course you needed but sorry it wasn't one of ours. We are a much smaller company than the others you mentioned so it's hard for us to compete on price.

We're a "Mom & Pop" company bootstrapped by my husband and I. Most of the other guys are either VC funded or owned by large publishing companies. We were invited to be a part of the ACE world and it's all new to us. We will be going through another round of accreditation with ACE and will have 40 courses in all approved by the end of this year. Most are LL but some will be UL and different than other companies offer.

I really appreciated finding these discussion forums. I now have a much better idea of what you are looking for in a class and which topics you want to see offered. If you ever have any suggestions for me and Ed4Credit, please let me know. My “door” is always open! We want to be a part of the community that is improving online education. Smile

The Study.com and Ed4Online were already known, but I'm glad you're finding out for the rest of those, that's great.

Just an FYI, the Victimology course through CSU-Global was previously given a PSY-364 and the one through Propero was given an AOJ-381 (same as TESU's course), by members of this forum - sounds like TESU again can't get their ducks in a row here.

The PF Terrorism matches up with TESU's Terrorism course exactly.

Keep those course equivalencies coming!!

Thanks for the heads up! Oops I just noticed I skipped one more course equivalency that was included in the email TESU sent me for anyone's future reference

Propero :Criminology TESU equivalency - SOC-291

The Victimology course from Propero transfers in as AOJ-380 and does not duplicate TESU's AOJ-381 according to my academic eval. The Victimology course can also be used as a psych elective and appears to count as social science. The reference to AOJ-381 may have been a guess based off of TESU's course but TESU typically transfers vicitimology in as AOJ-380 unless it is taken at CC. TESU considers other victimology courses to be different then their own.

That was a known one (to me), I'm just glad they gave it the same number as they previously did, it wouldn't surprise me if they changed it for some random reason.

So all of those (other than the ones requesting more info) will count as soc electives, even the ones without "SOC" as the primary classification?
