To Upgrade or not?

Windows 10.
Due to deadline, is it worth it?

I took the plunge, updating my notebook from Win7. I am nothing but happy with Win10.

I am a developer (windows, web & android) and sysadmin, so I'm literally using my PC all day, every day. When something is even a little bit annoying, it's a big hassle. I absolutely couldn't stand Vista or Win8 due to their many small irritations.

My $0.02.

Thank you alzee,

Since you are a developer and sysadmin, do you possibly have any input concerning security issues?

I'm holding off. My main laptop has some hardware issues and I will have to replace it soon. Don't see a reason to go through with it and then replace the computer anyway.

Hmm.. nothing beyond general best practices, really. Defense in depth (windows firewall + external firewall like pfsense), judicious use of ad and script blockers in your browser(s), frequent offsite/external backups of important data. Nothing specific to Win10 pokes me in the eye.

Anything in detail you want to know?

All 3 of my Windows 7 Home Premium Laptops have been upgraded to Windows 10 Home. My Windows 7 Pro laptop has been upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. There really isn't too much of a difference, only two gripes I have is... I wanted the Pro versions for my newer laptops... But my older Dell Laptop got upgraded to that version.

Judicious - what a good word.
Ah, so many changes, so little time.
These class and testing sites have to upgrade.
In the meantime, while upgrading, when doing the fast 'whatever' settings, we give up so much of ourselves, for free?

Best regards,

So, what little I know:
XP is toast.
Windows 7 has like a few - 10 days to upgrade, or you have to pay for new program - or something.
Windows 10 has like a zillion trackers imbedded in it, and you have to go in and remove every single one.

We are going to the cloud I guess.

So, if anyone is hiding in the shadows, oh well.

Hope you had a great time.

It's not as full of spyware as all the Mac and Linux fanboys want you to believe. By default it's watching what you type into the start menu and in addition to showing you programs you have installed, it's showing you programs available in the windows live store. You can disable this functionality, along with everything else you find intrusive or privacy threatening.

At the end of the day, none of that stuff actually matters though. Google reads all my emails every day long before I do and the net result is what.. the ads I see on youtube are tailored more towards me? Talk about a first world problem.. Big Grin

I recommend ad blockers not for the sake of privacy, but because they help filter out stuff that's actually malicious, like ads that try to look like part of the UI or browser in order to trick you into clicking.

+1, That's exactly how I feel. I also have MSSecurity Essentials along with Malwarebytes and CCleaner to make sure my system is virus and malware free. I like a clean, defragmenter system and hardly any shortcuts on my desktop.
