Since you and I have talked, you already know some of this, but I started out using ALEKS stats with zero algebra knowledge. Quit around the 50% mark, and watched these https://www.learner.org/resources/series65.html I took notes and it was really really enjoyable. Not at all mathy. Once I had my feet, I went through the full series on Khan. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability They now have practice quizzes built in, but when I did it, they didn't - so I took notes and watched every video in order. I ended up not watching the last 5 or so because my brain was melting, but at least the first half of videos were totally fine. It started to get harder, but was doable. When I got into the end and started to feel frustrated (ALEKS all over again) I just stopped and went to take the DSST. I'm 99% sure the raw score requirement isn't nearly as high as some exams, because I wasn't confident- but I passed (and preserved my GPA!)
EDIT: I looked up my old notes from 8 years ago- I also watched the Standard Deviants videos from Netflix.

Exactly! That GPA thing is huge for me since a) I turned into a GPA conscious adult, b) I may go on to grad school, and c) I only have a couple graded courses still to take.
I'll start with Khan Academy -- my children tell me they really dislike the newer format, but I'm sure the content is the same. Not sure I can stomach the Standard Deviants yet.

I watched Khan wayyyy back (like other older members here) before it was really "a thing" and once it took off and he got $$$$ he improved the site. Now, it's probably a zillion times better, but it is for sure more structured than back in the day. That said, I'm trying to embrace change and not look like an old fogie

I know what you mean. The kids started watching in 2008/9-ish. Then they did programming, and liked earning points.
Once Khan got lots of funding it turned into more of a zoo and branched out to teach multiple subjects. Now that it's all supposed to be Common Core aligned with bells & whistles it is apparently harder to just learn basics.

I hadn't looked at Khan for over 2 years until this thread. And yes, it's very different. Statistics is organized in a content/curriculum manner. But it starts out with a "mission/mastery" module which is very much analogous to an ALEKS pre-assessment. It's stated goal is to help place you in the right curricula path for your current state of knowledge. I tried it out for a couple of hours yesterday and only got to 24% so far after not missing a single question. For me this is getting quite tedious since I know this subject quite well. Over the next few days, I'll try to stick it out to see where it leads and report back.
Also, within the contents curriculum, the subtopic is first presented as a problem to solve. If you don't know how to start, you click on a video for help.
In sum, I might say at this point that Khan now appears to me like a "video ALEKS" - w/o the credit path- if you use it's Mission/Master module as your course guide.

Good comparison- too bad they don't have a test out feature for each of the circle/module/lesson thingies. It would be much faster if you could simply log those as complete and move forward. (not that I ever have to worry about that lol)

Hello everyone. I've been a member here a while and enjoy reading the posts from active members. In particular Aleks Intro to Statistics. This course has given me fits and I've gotten to the 59% percent mark on assessment and then quit for about 9 months. I was actually so fed up with Aleks Statistics that I had stopped everything else (I was on a DSST exam roll) Passed 9 DSST exams in under 2 months. Knocked out Aleks Pre-calc, Alegebra, Trigonometry.
This Aleks Statistics course is my Demon basically. I've read every post on it. I got into the first 2 Khan Acad. videos on YouTube and fell asleep (3 occasions).
I appreciate all of the information in particular on this topic/thread. I'm re-focused now. I'll start with the Khan Acad. start from square one and learn the basics.
Thank you.
EDIT: What course on the Khan Acad. website do you recommend for help with Aleks Statistics? There are several courses listed....

While the Khan offering can get you there, it's much like a video ALEKS without the credit path. It's just as long, tedious, and boring with too much overkill for what's needed to pass the DSST or TECEP which are both easier than a getting to a 70% final assessment in ALEKS.
Another totally free approach would be to go through all the all the lectures and exercises in this edX archived MOOC: https://courses.edx.org/courses/NotreDam...T2015/info Then take the DSST practice test. For any items you miss on this test go to this TECEP reference course: HyperStat Online: An Introductory Statistics Textbook and Discussion of whether most published research is false Here it's very easy to lookup by topic what you need to review. It has hyperlinks to all the pertinent pre-reqs as you might need. It has exercises with selected answers available. Now you will be ready.
Now if you desire a "real" self-paced course with tutoring because you will go on to further stats study either in Bio-Stats or Research Methods in Psychology, I recommend a new offering from Acrobatiq for $70. Upon completion of this course, you can earn credit via DSST, TECEP, Uexcel, or ALEKS. Shoot me a PM if interested.
