Pick a specific niche within business and find a way to become an expert in it. This can be something like money niches , or even handling HR. There are many sub niches within business that you can pick from. There are ways to extend your knowledge in specific fields by simply finding what you like to do most.
There are tons and tons and tons of non profit companies all over San Francisco that can use help... it's the holiday season after all. From organizing events to helping homeless people find work. There are options out there... even if it means starting off small and minimal ... it's better than nothing.
Keep moving forward.

The MBA is a mile wide and an inch deep. It was originally designed for professionals who climbed the corporate ladder based on their tech skills to round out their business knowledge so they could effectively manage other functional units. It does not really aid a person in acquiring the skills needed to start a career where tech skills (not necessarily IT) are required. I think kids without work experience should be recommended against the MBA and should be recommended to pursue something more technical like a MS in Economy, Accounting, or Computer Science.

I think even a business degree itself is a mile wide and an inch deep. I don't think there is much there that can actually help you in an actual job; but there is a lot there that can help you understand the overall picture of the company you work for. I found that after I took lots of business/marketing/accounting/finance courses, I just had a better understanding of the company, and I had a clue what they were talking about in company-wide meetings. But for my day-to-day work, not a single thing I ever took a course in applied to me (and I've worked in Finance & HR).

Haven't gone after my MBA yet, but just wondering does Patten or WGU require business experience before you can actually enroll into their school?
Just wondering seeing people jump over him initially made me curious about their requirements, as nothing on their websites states that business or even work experience is required. And I know a lot of brand new 2nd Lts (his age and their usually age is similar) who come out of High School and go to college and never work a real world job, most are just white bread kids who parents pay for their way through.
Also before anyone claims that is racist, one I am white, two by white bread I don't necessarily mean their race. I am talking about kids who parents are rich or well off enough to pay for their way through life, basically kids regardless of race who never had to bust their ass to make ends meet. You can usually tell the ones who are and who are not, they usually look perfect like they have no scars to show for how/where they got to in life. Granted sometimes it can be misleading, but 90% of the time if the kid looks like his life was soft then usually his life was soft. Only bringing this up because from my experience it is not out of the question to find people with a BS, BA, MBA, MS, or even PsyD/PHD with no prior work experience. Also by prior work experience I do mean as in he never worked at a Walmart/McDs/BK (or something similar), obviously a Doctor would probably have to do some kind of on the job training, before he/she was allowed to work on his/her own.

Traditionally the MBA requires some leadership or business experience. WGU refers to a year or two which they verify by your resume and a phone interview. It's an honor system process so far as I know, so one could probably circumvent the system with little effort.
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010
I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this). Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Patten would be most likely my choice for the MBA, if you (or anyone else can) answer these questions it would be most appreciated:
1) Does Patten require the same?
2) Been in the army now for 2yrs and was a manager (for about 1yr, at a Walmart) before joining the army, would that be enough to qualify? My jobs before that probably wouldn't qualify as leadership experience.
3) Phone interview with me or my current/previous bosses?
Anyone who answers these questions thanks in advance, as stated before haven't started my MBA yet, but will be starting soon.
Sorry if anyone feels my question might be a hijacking, but figured I would ask here instead of starting a new thread since it is related to my last reply.

Don't know if its a requirement of Patten or not.
I can't imagine them turning away someone who was a manager in their role in service to the country. I'm sure that would suffice.
Patten nor WGU are at all likely to call your boss or even verify your employment. Talk with them with a little maturity and be able to speak about a little leadership/management and I think you will be on without much problem.
