My Experience with Jay Cross/DIY Degree
#11
An Update:

I received these emails this morning:

Jay Cross (Do It Yourself Degree)
Oct 16, 07:15

Hi Isaiah,
Thanks for your note. I appreciate your candor, and after thinking it over, I agree. Regardless of the changes we've decided to make, the fact is, you DID purchase under the expectation of getting ongoing help from me.
And I don't want you to feel misled, or unhappy with your purchase in any way.
I'm in DIY Degree for the long-term. Happy students are the lifeblood of our organization.
So I'm happy to help you.
Let's schedule a phone call to discuss your current challenges.
NEXT STEPS: Reply with three (3) dates/times that work for you next week, as well as your best phone number.

Thank you!

- Jay

Hi Isaiah,

I replied to your support ticket, but wanted to reach out here as well.

To confirm, I agree -- no matter what changes we've made in our business, you joined DIY Degree under a certain set of expectations. And I do NOT want them to be violated.

(My administrator, who replied to you, didn't fully understand the magnitude of those changes.)

In no way do I want to leave you "out in the cold" after you trusted me enough to join.

The trust of my students is sacred, goes far beyond profit, and will never be broken.

With that said, please respond here with three (3) dates/times that we can talk next week. And I'll happily help you get the results you signed up for.

Best,

- Jay

At this point, I will set up a time and do the phone call with him, but I will also post my degree plan here when I get back from work to get some input if y'all don't mind.

Thanks for the input and advice! I really appreciate it!

I'm here for the moral support too - and occasionally I contribute some of my own advice/info. However I'm too ADD to try and help someone with a degree plan Smile I barely could figure out mine, but I had help from a fabulous advisor at Excelsior.

LaterBloomer Wrote:It's a bit frustrating. Some of us were discussing on another thread recently about our eagerness to share information with others about alternative degree options. Folks might indicate interest, but they didn't follow through. There have been other folks like you in this forum who are motivated and ready to go, but you end up on a path that isn't as smooth as it could be.

Chalk up the money paid as the price of experience, and come here and ask questions, etc. As Cookderosa has already responded, I don't need to introduce her to you. I can say that her advice is like having your own personal college guide. Some folks (like me!) are better at offering moral support. Regardless of what you need, we're here for you.

Good luck with your educational efforts!
Denise

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.

Were these both emails sent to your personal email account? From his verbiage it sounds like he wrote two you in two different formats. I was just curious if one was a direct message on this forum.

Hi,

I have attached my original degree plan from Jay Cross, designed for a General Business from Excelsior. The three highlighted items are tests I have completed. The main thing I want to change is I would prefer to study more Business or History related subjects rather than the multiple Psychology related exams on the list.

I am going to have a follow up discussion with Jay on Thursday about this. Any input from you guys, however, is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for all your help! I am really excited to continue testing out of college.

If I were you, I would ask him to put it in a format similar to what Excelsior shows as their requirements, so you know exactly which exams line up with which requirements. Then you'll be able to ask for alternate exams/courses.

For example, you took the Environment & Humanity DSST, what section was that for? Why did he choose that one for you? What other alternatives are there?

I don't think I'd like it if someone picked out all of the exams I should take. How does he/she know what I'm good at, and what I want to do? Did they take any of that into account? Did they give you any options other than exams, like Straighterline? Do they know what else is out there? Do they have alternatives if you don't pass an exam? Are they grouped together to make studying easier? Are easier exams first, with harder ones coming later?

I think you can get much better advice from the people here than you can from DIY Degree.

I also had a poor experience with Jay and his site - I wrote it off and got all the useful advice to graduate from this site and all the helpful members here.
