I am about to take my first CLEP ever in Introductory Sociology this Friday. I got an 85% on my first practice test a few weeks ago, and after studying more haven't been able to do any better, despite switching up free-clep-prep, petersons, paid free-clep-prep. I seem to make a lot of stupid mistakes. Should I postpone the exam and give myself more time to study? This is my first exam and I am really worried about messing it up and wasting the $135 testing fee and 170 miles of driving.

typically, consistent practice test scores over 50% are considered good enough.

Take the Official CLEP Practice Test as it's the most accurate.

I studied the wrong Sociology text and still passed it. It wasn't very difficult (or had a low curve). You should be able to pass with no problem.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.
Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.
Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.
Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.
Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Thanks, everyone. I feel much better about this now. Westerner: thanks for the suggestion. I had completely forgotten about the official practice test
I'm trying to figure out whether there's a second test I should consider adding. Maybe algebra or college math? 100 question practice tests usually take 40 mins or so, so I may have enough time. It certainly would make the $55 sitting fee easier to swallow.

$55? Ouch! Have you looked to see if there are other schools in the area that are cheaper. I remember someone on here that said there was a known school (for profit I think) that charged nothing.
It's quite possible that they would charge the $55 again, you may want to double check.

DeVry used to charge nothing the last time I checked, which was a year ago. DeVry has limited hours. Strayer and University of Phoenix are somewhere in the $15-20 range.

The $55 is per testing date. There is literally one testing center in my state. There is a testing center in a neighboring state which is closer and cheaper, but they only offer testing every few months and I'd like to move a little faster than that. I may plan a vacation to somewhere with better options the next time I am ready to take a test.

Driving 170 miles, I would definitely take two tests per visit. Why not consider DSST Introduction to Computing (IC flashcards) it was very easy. There is also a CLEP version o the exam, Information Systems & Computer Applications. Anoither easy exam (many take cold) that is basically reading comprehension is CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature (IC flashcards). Heck College Mathemalics is also pretty easy, you could possiblly knock out three or four of these easier exams in one day. Anothr bonues, Analyzing Literature and College Math are 6cr exams.
There have been other forum members who have had to travel a great distance to test and take multiple exams in one day.
Good luck to you!!
Edit to add: Valedecem, Check your PM.
DSST Technical Writing & Introduction to Business (if you have experience) also require limited to no study.
