Newbie with some college credits

So I was reading on other threads that I should actually choose what kind of degree I want, then take the tests, THEN pick and enroll in the school. I was looking at the Big 3 and they do say that you have to pay to complete enrollment, but I wanted to know which one was going to accept my credits (as many as possible-- say one school will transfer 33 of my credits and another will do only 29, then I will want to pick the one that takes 33. Although how will I know which school will accept how many credits before I actually enroll? Help?

Also, I have 35 credits right now. I want a Bachelor's, but since there's always so much in my life going on, I wondered if it would be at all smart to get an Associate's to get it done and under my belt, then continue on to the BA. Is there any disadvantage to doing that?

I also don't know which degree I want. (I have a lot of interests and when I was younger I thought, I have time to figure it out...well I'm 42 and still don't know.) I definitely want a Bachelor's and since I'm so bad with math, I'm thinking a BA is right. Now, in what? General Studies? (is that a thing?) Psychology? Sociology? Business? I would love to do women's studies but I don't think any of the Big 3 offer that.

So I have to narrow things down since figuring out a plan is step one.

Any advice?

The downside to the associates is additional cost. Most people on here go from 60-120 credits so fast, they barely had time to make use of their associates, so that decision is entirely on you. First things first, don't waste time, study and CLEP your gen eds now while you're still deciding. THe gen eds are needed for all programs in the big 3 and will not be a waste, just make sure you have no overlap. When you get a chance, visit the degree forum wiki and look at the sample degree plans, members from this site took their own time with no monetary incentive to put together some great plans, finally take a little time to decide what you want your degree in. Popular to contrary belief, what your degree is in is important. Try to balance your own personal interests with the needs of the job market and you can find a happy medium.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

I just also remembered that when I was 12 (yes, 12!) I did the Institute for Children's Literature writing course and that's worth 6 credits for Charter Oak (as it says on their website since the Institute is in CT.) It says I just need to open a "credit account" at the school and have them transferred. I know nothing about this, but cool, right? I hope I can apply those to a degree somehow. Goodness, that was 30 years ago. heh!
