I'll use my own story as an example of what can happen with advisors. I had applied to all of the Big 3 around January or February of 2011. COSC and TESC had awarded me the same number of credits (more than Excelsior), but TESC gave me several UL credits while COSC gave me none. I was planning on enrolling in COSC anyway since I could take the GRE. Well, the only university offering the GRE in my area had to cancel it. I also found out that COSC doesn't award many UL credits for the Psychology GRE. After reading posts from Cookderosa and other more senior members on this forum, I determined that TESC was the better fit for my situation. I informed my COSC advisor that I would be enrolling in another school because I wanted to finish by the end of the year. He told me that I would not be able to finish before the end of the year at any school because I had no UL credits. He was a nice guy, but he was wrong. I finished my degree at TESC before September 2011 and graduated December 2011.

Even though these advisors are at nontraditional schools, they are still unaware of many of the nontraditional methods of earning credit and the speed at which people can complete these credits. If I would have just listened to him and not read this forum, I would have spent a lot more money and graduated a couple of semesters later.

Back to helping the OP...
OP, which credits do you actually have? If we could see a copy of your EC evaluation, we might be able to help you better. Be sure to delete your name/ personal info before you attach the document.

sanantone Wrote:I'm not mad at Exfactor; I just like joking. Exfactor has some valid points, but I still think it would help the OP a lot to post his or her credits. An advisor at any school will not know, or even advise if he/she did know, that another school will be a better option. An Excelsior advisor can tell the OP if his/her credits will be a better fit for another Excelsior degree program. An evaluation from TESC or COSC will help the OP compare. This is a pretty good place for the OP to be directed toward a particular degree at one of those schools. Honestly, we're much more open-minded than the advisors and think of things they would have never thought of. I've blind-sided advisors at TESC and COSC with my questions.

We all have our disagreements about which path is the best to take in particular situations, but we're all here to help. At least on this forum, the OP can compare and determine which advice is best for him or her. Cookderosa has helped a lot of people for free because she cares. She is not a shill for TESC. She has experience with the school and likes it. I really like TESC. Rebel100 and Publius2k4 really like COSC. Others really like Excelsior. There might be a slight bias in that we know more about one school than the others, but we have no problem with directing people to another school or forum members who know more about another school when it's obviously a better option.

AND if you checked my posts in the archives, you'll find zillions of posts where I suggest someone NOT attend the big 3. I think, however, the point is for the OP to get feedback, and since that person seems to have disappeared, this thread isn't really helping.

In the spirit of this thread that I dug up i'm looking for a little final clarification on a few things. Based on the exams I took below, would I be better suited for an AA or AS Liberal Studies at Excelsior? To add to my list, i'm about to take the DSST World Religions. 1. How do you get a GPA from Excelsior? Do I have to take a certain course to do that? (The airlines want to see a GPA from a college to interview) 2. Is an AA or AS quicker to complete? I plan on doing intro to Algebra (Aleks) for the math and then the Capstone. Can anyone see what else I may have left besides the capstone, World Religions, and the Aleks? Thank you!

I plan on going for the BS Liberal Studies (History) after I complete the AS or AA.

Learflyer, do you have any other classes or tests from anywhere? English Composition I and II, for example?

At the moment, you have 30 hours completed. When you include World Religions, ALEKS math, and the Capstone, that only gives you 39 hours, so you will need 21 more hours. Here is one way you could complete that for Excelsior, but somehow I think you have more credits somewhere. Pilot licenses, maybe?

I. General Education Requirements
1. Written English Requirement Need Straighterline English Composition I
2. Humanities 1 Need Straighterline English Composition II
3. Humanities 2 Need DSST World Religions
4. Social Science/ History 1 Intro to Psych..............65/50
5. Social Science/ History 2 Intro to Sociology.........58/50
6. Mathematics Need ALEKS Beginning Algebra
7. Science Environment/Humanity.....................423/400
8. Arts & Science Elective 1 Human Growth and Development.....68/50
9. Arts & Science Elective 2 Intro to Educational Psych.............54/50
10. Need Associate Capstone
11. Need Coopersmith Information Literacy
12. Fundamentals Of Counseling............56/45
13. Intro to Law Enforcement................59/45
14. Here's To Your Health....................455/400
15. Substance Abuse..........................458/400
16. US History 1.................................59/50
17. Need CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature 6
18. Need CLEP Social Science and History 6
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

Hi Kay. You were kind enough to help me before on another thread and this is what you suggested below. I looked at "my Excelsior" and couldn't find whether or not english comp from my previous schools was accepted. I already took and passed Enviro/humanity. I'm about to take World religions. Then I plan on doing Aleks beginning algebra and then the capstone. I guess I may need an english comp?

1.00 semester hour in information literacy- from Excelsior
6.00 semester hours in the humanities- CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature or World Religions(in progress) and 3 more Humanities
3.00 semester hours in college math- ALEKS Beginning Algebra
3.00 semester hours in the natural sciences- DSST Environment and Humanity(just took and passed)
3.00 semester hours to fulfill the associate level capstone course- from Excelsior

In other words my above post contains what I have left to accomplish according to an Excelsior advisor.

Now I remember! There is a current thread about Coopersmith's Info Literacy being easy, cheap, and accepted recently at Excelsior. Smile

Also, your Associate Capstone combined with your previous course grades from all other sources will establish your GPA at Excelsior. This is different from TESC.
