Can you even obtain a BA from excelsior anymore only by exams. Confused here
#1
Hi, I originally applied to get a BS in Social Science with an International Relations major but realized that I would not be able to fully CLEP or DSST all the exams out to get a degree and Id have to sign up for their classes. I then decided to switch back to my original major which is a BA in History. Now, Excelsior requires the following for that major:

2 courses in US history
2 courses in European history

To satisfy the 2 courses in US history, I can take the Civil war DSST and that takes care of one course but there's no other exam I can take to satisfy the 2 course requirement and you cant use the US History CLEP
Same with European history, I can take Western Europe since 1945 DSST but that still leaves one more course I need to satisfy the requirements and there is no exam(to my knowledge)that I can take to satisfy the 2 course requirements.

It seems this is set up to force you to take a couple Excelsior classes or am I missing something here?

Hi! I'm an Excelsior student also... I'm not familiar with the requirements for a degree in History, but have you looked into Excelsior's UExcel exams - specifically World Conflicts since 1900? Also, you do know you cannot completely test out of any degree from Excelsior - at the very minimum, you need to take their proprietary Capstone course, and find an acceptable Information Literacy course.

Have you looked into online courses from outside institutions? BYU, LSU, etc. have numerous upper level course offerings...Be sure to get approval from your advisor before signing up, but it is another options for gaining credits.

I'm sure others here with a history background can add to my post...

Good Luck!

Yeah the capstone class I was aware of but it seems their other requirements are put in place in such a way that you have no choice but to take electives from them to meet all your requirements. What other credit sources can I use besides CLEP DSST, and U Excel?

You can also use TECEPs. Go to the Excelsior site and download the Credit By Exam catalog - it tells you what you can take and what it will count as.

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.
