Help With Accounting Degree & Want New York CPA Requirements

I am asking for guidance about some online accounting courses.

Hoping to get some minor guidance, I found out about this forum through this post: Sanantone's BSBA in Accounting - Degree Forum Wiki

Before I begin, I am aware that I can pay the $75 for a school to tesc, excelsior or charter oak to evaluate my credits and I will most certainly do that, but I was just hoping for a bit of guidance before hand.

I currently have a BS in Finance from a State college, so hopefully most of the credits will transfer (Do I even really need them to transfer? I don't know, I just know that I want to test out of as many courses as possible).

I was looking at the CPA 150 Hour Requirement and some of the courses here NYS Public Accountancy - Typical 150-hour program

I know CLEP will work, I wonder about the rest. This is the quote from the CPA website (yes, I can call and ask, but I also feel that I can receive just as bad information from them, so if anybody had experience that would always be helpful)

"Correspondence, CLEP credit, CPA Review courses and online courses are acceptable when an
applicant receives credit for the courses at a regionally accredited college or university. These courses
must appear on an official transcript. "

I need 33 Credits in Accounting including:

Financial Accounting
Cost Accounting
Taxation
Audit and Attestation
Accounting Research


The accounting credits I currently have are (9 out of 33 required)
Financial Accounting
Cost Accounting
Managerial Accounting

Managerial or Business Communications: Straighterline (Business Communications), Saylor (Corporate Communication), Uexcel ECEP (Workplace Communication with Computers)
Intermediate Accounting I - Penn Foster (check for current ACE approval) or Straighterline (Financial Accounting)
Intermediate Accounting II - Penn Foster
TECEP Federal Income Taxation

I feel that I would still need many accounting credits, where could they be obtained? I also need junior or senior level accounting credits, should I just take the course itself at TESC? What are people's thoughts on this? Course Descriptions & Syllabi

Of course I will do everything I can so that there are no duplicates as well.

Question, has anybody had luck taking the CPA exam in a different state?

Seeing as you already have a Finance degree, it's not necessary to get a full second degree in accounting to meet CPA requirements. A popular way to get online accounting credits here seems to be through LSU Independent Study. They have a certificate program for people like you where you can take senior accounting courses for LSU credit to meet CPA requirements. https://is.lsu.edu/ACCTCertificateProg.a...O&Online=1

If you want to invest a little more time, the University of South Dakota offers an online 30 credit Master of Public Accountancy program which is extremely cost-effective (~$12000) but it will take longer because you'll have to meet prerequisites, so if taking the CPA exams as soon as possible is key, then this probably isn't the route for you. (not to mention that MSA type degrees aren't terribly valuable once you are a CPA) I'm pursuing a CPA in MA "just for fun" and thought of taking this route but I am just loading up on accounting electives in my MBA instead because it is much faster, although having access to another business school's network is tempting.

LSU Independent Study, linked above, is a popular place to earn accounting credits because they're reasonably priced.

I need 33 Accounting credits total, and neither of those courses will give me the full accounting credits necessary, or the full 150 college credits required.

What could I do to get an extra 6 or 10 or whatever college credits for the CPA Exam?

I need to find out exactly which courses at LSU or UNA I actually have to take. Does anybody know what kind of reviews the two places get, how well do they prepare you for the exam, and who gives a better education? Thank you

You really should contact New York's accountancy board to see if they will accept alternative sources of credit if they are transcribed by a regionally accredited school. I'm not sure if you will encounter someone on here who has tried to become a CPA in New York.

TESC does offer 10 accounting courses only leaving you 1 short. TESC's tuition is actually not that bad.

I have 9 accounting credits so only need 24 more (unless they are repeats which they might be). Kind of insane asking for 33 accounting credits. I wouldn't mind taking accounting credits at UNA or LSU and transferring them to TESC if that is possible?

I found this, and I did ask the NYS Accountancy board, but they are a bit slow to respond. Hence why I was curious about getting some quick credits.

I agree with the LSU and UNA suggestions for your accounting credits. There should be no reason to transfer these credits to TESC since these are from regionally accredited universities.

If you need other credits through CLEP, etc., you may be able to bank the credits with Excelsior.

You should definitely check to make sure this is acceptable for NY CPA education requirements.

I believe Excelsior College's acct program is already aligned for the NY accountancy program, perhaps even empire state college?
