Homeschooling

Why "holy cow"? Research shows that the degree of homeschool regulation in a state does not effect achievement. Just because it's not required to be taught doesn't mean it's not being taught. The state of Texas doesn't feel that it needs to micromanage its homeschool population in order for them to succeed academically.

How does anyone know if they're succeeding academically if they aren't measured by an external party? It's just taken for granted?

And "holy cow" because... it's legal to not teach your kids history or science? I was under the impression that states had education standards.

Yes, amazing as it is, children can learn, even without measurement by an external party.

So we just have to take their word.

I wish I could do that with my bachelor's degree. It would save me some time.

Who is "we"? I am unsure why you think parents are accountable to you concerning what they are teaching their own children.

The citizens of the country who all benefit from every child getting an education? I'm not accusing anyone specifically of not educating their children, but it's shocking that you can do that.

For the record, all states have measures in place for regulating homeschooling. Some regulate more highly than others. (Although, as stated above, higher regulation does not correlate to higher test scores.) It would be illegal to say you are homeschooling your child if you are not actually educating them.

Well, that's basically what I was asking when I asked if there is some external party involved.

There are enough issues with the poor quality of science educators in public schools, I just get concerned about parents who in some cases have a clearly stated interest in encouraging children to distrust or disregard science. Even if they cover the material in class, I assume they're either not doing it justice or directly contradicting it.

The majority of homeschoolers even in low regulation states do testing each year (out of choice rather than requirement) and score higher than public schooled students. There is also a correlation between homeschooling and higher achievement on college entrance exams as well as better performance at college (yes, even in Texas LOL).

I find it amusing that you have concerns over the academic side of homeschooling. In this day and age the academic side is not usually in question. IME most people who have concerns over homeschooling do so regarding "socialization".

I don't think it's unreasonable to have concerns when people are stating that indoctrination and "protection" from knowing about homosexuality are stated objectives.
