AV8R linked to this guy's LinkedIn page on the other forum. I thought it would be good to post it in its own thread here as a warning of getting too much education in business/management without the experience. This guy had a lot of work experience as a supervisor for a construction company, but that job ended over a decade ago. Ever since, he has had low-end jobs. I don't count the 1-year stint as a CEO of his own failed company as anything significant. And yet, he just kept on furthering his education all the way to the PhD level getting degrees in management/human resources and leadership (I personally do not have a high opinion of leadership degrees). What makes it even worse is that he attended some very expensive colleges. He's now an associate at Walmart. Hopefully, he can work his way up to a management position. I know the job market is still not that great, but it is not bad in Virginia, where this man is currently living.

Indeed. I always tell people that degrees and certifications are door openers, but you shouldn't expect them to automatically lead to a job. They'll get you interviews (and I bet this guy gets looked at a lot), but employers want to see demonstrable experience that you can actually do the job well. A great cautionary tale. Thanks for sharing it.

Not that my current AFSC is terrible or anything (just... boring), but wow, I'm grateful now more than ever to just be employed and am knocking out my education within roughly the same field (business/HRM) in the USAF.

Rhodes scholar Kris Kristofferson appeared on Saturday Night Live on July 31, 1976 where he touted a fake book Talk Country. He facetiously claimed that the book enabled him to succeed by overcoming too much education. The book offered practical advice such as dropping the g from words such as walking and talking so as not to come across as overly educated.
LinkedIn wouldn't show me this guy's profile. Who was the guy with 10 or more associate's degrees? I can't find the links to him.
How he wants to spend his money is none of my business. If he enjoys going to school, there are much worse ways to spend time and money.

Yeah, Aric Hall is just insane as demonstrated by the ridiculous lawsuits he's filed. He complains on his website about not being able to find a job; and, the last I heard, he was living with his parents. The Walmart guy doesn't have too many degrees; it just looks like he tried to educate himself out of a bad employment situation. His job as a construction supervisor ended around the time of the first recession of the 2000s. Of course, the construction industry took another major hit during the last recession. Between the construction job and working at Walmart, he has worked as a temp laborer, in some kind of factory job, dishwasher, and started a company that lasted one year. He's been at Walmart for over 2 years. I have a feeling that he didn't earn his degrees as a hobby. I would also bet that he took out student loans.

An unfortunate situation. I commend him for sucking it up, pulling up his sleeves and getting a job and not relying on others to prop him up.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.
Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.
Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.
Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.
Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

An interesting read. Generally speaking, the more education you have, the better off you'll be. However, advanced degrees don't guarantee that you'll get a high-paying position; as Sanantone mentioned, you can't always educate yourself out of a bad employment situation.
Also, I'd be a little wary of hiring anyone - even a high school dropout - who can't spell the names of his previous employers ("Cracker Barrell").
