Advice about geology degree please.

Take a look at the university of North Dakota online. With 9 of those courses at the upper level you could likely cobble together a geology concentration at charter oak, the gen eds and eectives could be tested out of, charter oak will take about 30 FEMA.

GIS is something i have never heard of that looks promising. Kind of like the type of logging i do now. What I would really like to end up in would be the geologist on location. Do you think that would lead to that?

If you can cobble together the requirements from other schools, I think COSC's geology concentration would be your best bet. TESC offers environmental studies and environmental science, but it does not offer all of the required courses. You would still have to find transfer courses, and you wouldn't be any closer to being a geologist. The environmental studies program is more of a social science degree than natural science. I was going to mention COSC's geology degree, but I assumed you already knew about it. You still have to worry about finding the specific requirements somewhere else. If you're going to go the environmental science route, APUS is reasonably priced, accepts some CBEs and ACE credits, and offers all of the courses you need.

I'm not that familiar with geology positions in the petroleum industry. All I know is that GIS and certain engineering disciplines are highly valued by the petroleum industry for other positions. After looking at a few geology openings in my area (there is an oil boom here), I see that most of the jobs specifically and exclusively ask for geology degrees. The others mention geophysics, geoscience, and petroleum engineering. When I expand my search to other parts of Texas, I see GIS, cartography, and geography asked for in some of the openings.

I no longer see geology listed on COSC's programs of study page, so you're going to want to make sure it's still being offered. That could be a cached page or a page they forgot to remove.

Im pretty settled on the COSC geology concentration. Thanks a lot guys. I noticed you mention FEMA credits that COSC still takes but when i search it i dont see much good info. Could someone please link me to a Fema overview thread?

It is still an option in their request information tab so hopefully its offered. It'll be a few more days before I have any time off during business hours to actually call them. I filled out the form but haven't heard anything back yet. Fingers crossed!

According to COSC they will indeed continue to offer the geology concentration. I am settled on this. I have a couple questions from going over the various ways to earn credit in COSC website.

They show GRE tests as offering way more credit than other tests. Is this where you would start?

A poster recommended FEMA credits earlier but I can find nothing about FEMA credits on COSC website.

The reason GRE exams give more credit is because they cover a ton of material. GRE stands for Graduate Record Exam - it's the exam to get into grad school after you've gotten your BA. They are also more expensive than the other exams (except for some Uexcel (previously ECE) exams).

CLEP - the most widely accepted exams out there, many schools take these as credit, same company that does AP exams
COSC - Charter Oak State College, I don't think they have their own exams
DSST - formerly DANTES, similar to CLEP, less widely accepted, some additional options that CLEP doesn't offer
GRE - Graduate Record Examination, harder than CLEP/DSST
ECE - now called UExcel, normally taken in a Pearson testing center, can get expensive, you get grades for these, and get them on an Excelsior College transcript
TECEP - TESU's exams, CR/NC only, lots of Upper Level (junior/senior level) options, those will be harder as they are not all multiple choice but can include essays or short-answers.
