FEMA & FREE College Credit courses
#21
snazzlefrag Wrote:Anar,

If you take a certain set of the FEMA courses, you receive a nice little "Professional Development" certificate (separate from the certificates you receive for passing each course individually).

Certainly a resume stuffer if you so choose!

Here's the link:
http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/PDS/

All seven courses are available individually...but if you pass the specified ones, you get the extra bonus certificate!

I took 12 courses including the seven that make up the Professional Development Series. So I have 12 individual certificates, plus the PDS certificate (it's bigger and nicer than the individual certs).

Have fun!
Hahaha, this is great to know. I'll get right on it. It certainly is a nice resume stuffer. And I love the bigger and nicer part. It might be nicer than the Excelsior diploma I'll get when I graduate, which is horrid.

It's nothing fancy at all. But you don't place a photograph of your certificate in your resume....you only need to state that you have earned it!

The individual course certificates are more like 3x5 computer printouts confirming that you passed. But the PDS certificate is an actual certificate, signed, dated, and with your name on it etc. And of course, the official FEMA logo.

Thankfully, they are not signed by "Heckuva Job" Brownie. Otherwise, the certificate would be more of a blight on your resume than a bonus!

No catch at all!

It's your tax dollars at work! You have already paid for this service out of your wages! Whether any given person chooses to make use of this service is up to them....but they have still bought and paid for it regardless.

From what I'm seeing, the only catch is you have to complete the online final exam. It's the least you can do, hehe.

It's surprising how many "free" things are out there that people just don't know about, especially on government sites.

If Brown's name would've been on it, it would've been a collector's item!

Hi Kev,

No! I have only 12 'raw courses' (my own terminology) under my belt. Until I pay Frederick Community College $65 per course, or pay TESC $250.00 for up to 60 credits, I do not actually have ANY FEMA college credits.

I am waiting on Anar getting a response from Excelsior to confirm that they will in fact still accept TESC credit bank credits for FEMA courses.

However, around August of 2005, a guy mentioned on the degreeinfo.com message board that he had successfully transferred 30+ FEMA credits via his TESC credit bank account. He posted the actual email from Excelsior that confirmed the transfer was successful.

So, no I don't have 30+ credits from FEMA, but yes, somebody else does!

But those credits CAN be earned simply by passing the exam for each course and then processing the raw courses through FCC or TESC to translate them into bona fide, legitimate, regionally accredited college credits!

I can't say it any more plainly than that!

Hope I have answered your question,

i can't wait to hear the answer either! anything to make this job quicker, easier, and cheaper. my husband and i are both just started pursuing our degrees and we had to start at the beginning because the technical school that we went to 29 years ago for certification/degree isn't worth the paper it's written on (nationally accredited). as you can see, we're old and not getting any younger.
