Help!!! Management Information Systems DSST
#1
Hello,

I am taking the MIS DSST this weekend and used mostly IC flashcards over and over again, however, when I proceeded to the Petersons practice tests NOTHING was what I studied from IC!! It was more database management, and systems theory, and programming...

Does anyone who has taken this test know which one is right- Peterson or Instacert? I'd hate to study and study and get myself into a scenario where I've burned alot of time studying garbage that isn't going to be on the test.

Also, does anyone have any pointers taking this exam? Just saw a post where they have a 51% pass rate O_o.

I REALLY need to pass this exam to go back to work so any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Have you looked at the Prometric (DSST exam company) fact sheet? It has nine sample questions and a breakdown of what is on the exam:
http://getcollegecredit.com/assets/pdf/d...ystems.pdf

I'd follow the breakdown on that, it matches the version of the test I took last year. The other note, since it is an exam with a passing score of 400, it has a predetermined passing percentage, in this case it is 58-62% depending on the form of the exam given. In other words, a score of 400 is equal to getting 58-62% of the questions correct.

As the study guide says above, "The exam tests the knowledge of telecommunications; network security; systems analysis and design; business decision making; knowledge management; data warehousing; and data mining." It's a wide mix of material, but if you did well on either of the other computer exams from CLEP or DSST, then I'd say focus on the topics from the study guide that you don't know and give it a shot.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

And please realize that the "pass rate" you are referring to is the military pass rate. There is nothing published from CLEP that will ever tell the public what the pass rate is from the general public.

Say, Cooperalex2004, you say a 400 (pass) is between 58% and 62%?
I always thought it was the same as about 50%, since some DSST's still use 2-digit scoring (i.e. 47, or 49 = pass, depending on test).
I tried to find out from DSST what the approx. % of a 400 pass was, and they never gave me a straight answer.
Where did you find out the 58-62 percents?

Thanks,

- Sam

The revised DSST exams are graded differently. There actual is nowhere, CLEP or DSST, a genuine "50%". Some tests may be that, or close, but it's not the "rule" if you know what I mean. Each exam is different.

Thanks Publias, at least DSST could have given me this link to explain!
Yes, so according to their chart, depending on which test you take, the % is anywhere from 38% to 72% !! HUGE difference between dif. tests.
Anyway, the chart has friendly numbers for Intro. to Business, which I'll be taking in a few days; 42-46%. Smile

Surely.
Exactly! Differs from exam to exam and from test to test.

When I came across the "confidential" clep pdfs, they had a grading scale for each one and they were all different. To hit a score of 50 you need to get x correct on say Biology and y correct on Marketing.

Oh, and good luck on Intro to Biz!! You should crush it.

cooperalex2004 Thanks for the advice. I've looked at the DSST fact sheet, worked the IC flash cards, Management Information Systems DSST Study Guide - Free-Clep-Prep.com helped to. However, when you go through EVERYTHING they seem to come up with out of the blue acronyms and questions on the Peterson tests.

I'm still only scoring around 60-61% on those. I've been studying for weeks now!!! Since I'm not working that's from 630am to 8 or 9 at night.

I've just never been good at taking tests. I'm hoping that if I take all of the questions on the Peterson tests, coupled with the IC flash cards, and free clep prep.com it will all be ok when I take the exam on Sunday... I just can't afford to fail this exam- Eeeeekkkk!

The key is confidence. Know that you'll do well and you may be surprised how well you do. Have you taken Intro to Computing or Info Systems and Computer Applications? Those are both lower-level courses and I actually took both before taking this exam (my CC gave credit for both of them as seperate courses, TESC did not).

That would explain why I only scored a 52 on Mngmt. info. Systems, though I thought I knew it pretty well; I had no idea then, that a pass for that test was 58-62, and (though I can't remember) prob. scored a 62 or something on a practice test, and thought I was good to go!
