2012 DOD pass rates - CLEP & DSST
#11
Publius Wrote:Just computed something.

For CLEPs and DSSTs combined, the total tests taken (by members of the DOD) in 2009 was 70,770. In 2012, it was 94,604. That's a 33.68% increase in tests taken. Not too shabby. (tried getting the info for 2011, but couldn't access the pdfs. I'll have to search for it later)

Something tells me that "testing out" is becoming a more popular option (at least by the members of the DOD). Slowly but surely... slowly but surely.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Okay, so this will probably seem like a silly question, but am I right in assuming that these pass rates are only for people who took the tests while in the military? So these don't show the pass rates for all the people who took CLEP/DSST tests, but aren't in the military?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I wasn't sure!

Thanks.

That would be mostly correct. These are the scores of those who fall under the DANTES-funded categories, so this would include the spouses and civilian employees of the following: AF Reserves, Air National Guard, Army Reserves, Army National Guard, Active-duty Coast Guard, and Coast Guard Reserves.

And, yes, for those who are wondering, the military is limited to which test titles are available by the paper/pencil method.

I am guessing that the super-low numbers in some of the CBT public speaking speech topics are due to the retirement of some topics as new ones are generated.

Okay, thanks for explaining that!

In 2009 this "other" category (ALL DOD - ALL Services {Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, & Coast Guard}) consisted of 5.32% of the grand total. So roughly 95% of the test takers, are military.

. I would argue that the paper based scores are lower because those are usually the exams administered at deployed locations. Usually soldiers are without family and friends and are usually bored. This will lead to someone likely just taking an exam out of boredom in the hope of getting lucky, where people back at home station are more inclined to take an exam only when needed. This is just an educated guess from a military guy.

Additionally, military pass rates should be taken with a grain of salt. There are many supervisors who "drag" their troops to the test center to take an exam to pad their performance reports/award submissions. Many of these guys are ill prepared to pass and lack the financial incentive (paying for the exam) to study.

I took a bunch of the data from '09, '11, and '12 and put them into graph form categorized by test. Couldn't upload it to here directly so you can check it out here if ya want: [URL="http://issuu.com/college_revolutionized/docs/dod_pass_rates"]DOD Pass Rates (graph form) for CLEPs and DSSTs

I was actually thinking along the same lines. I was thinking the reason some of the pass rates are so low is because since military can take the tests for free, they have nothing to lose if they don't pass it so maybe some of them didn't prepare as much as they would have if they were paying for it. Not that ALL of those in the military are like that, but I'm sure that some are.
