6 credits for a 3 credit course
#1
I got my transcript eval back from TESC, and I'm wondering if any of you ran into this issue. I have oodles of credits from community colleges (about 200...), but TESC can only accept 80. Fair enough. Here's what happened:

My accounting I course at the CC was worth 6 credits. The TESC adviser applied all 6 credits toward the required 3 credit ACC-101 course at TESC. Because of this, I can't transfer one of my other CIS courses in so I have to take an additional course.

I know the university in my area (UNM) has an articulation agreement with our community college, and that 6 credit accounting class articulates as UNM's 3 credit ACC101. I thought the same thing would have happened with TESC. I'm not sure if I should challenge the adviser's decision. Have any of you experienced this too?

btw, I did a search prior to this posting- there was one blurb under a thread called 'Tesc psych majors, what courses are you taking to 'test out' of your psych electives?', but I thought I'd try to see how many out there ran into the same issue.

Thanks!
Goal: BSBA CIS from TESC

TESC will always give you the same number of credits as was earned, in my case they took a four credit english comp course and gave me all of them as ENC-101. I had my CC credits all accepted since I wasn't to the cap, but they did give me four credits for ACC-101 and four more for ACC-102 since I took them both as four credits at my school. In the ideal world you shouldn't lose credits when they transfer, but I can see what you're saying. I'd start by comparing the content of ACC-101 and 102. If you can prove the course had content overlap with ACC-101 and ACC-102 you might be able to get them to split the credits and give you both codes if you'd rather have that (which may eliminate a course you'd have to take for many degrees). I guess at this point you can try to get them to accept it for less credits or you can try to get them to match it to both ACC-101 and ACC-102. I can't imagine why ACC-101 would take six credits to complete at any school, I'd guess you learned a lot of the managerial accounting content but the key with TESC is to take it slow and do your own research. If you have a solid case for something to be re-evaluated they are normally more than willing to work with people.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

It's an oversight. Just call them and tell them they gave you 6 instead of 3, and that they should please change it so you can bring in your computer class.

Also, the articulation between that CC and a university isn't relevant. TESC does have a community college credit cap, so you'll need to be very strategic in choosing your credits that come in vs the ones you want left out. You might need to schedule a phone apt with your advisor and go line by line on your transcript. TESC will allow you to cherry pick credit.

One last thing, CLEP/DSST/FEMA/ALEKS/SL, etc do not count toward your CC cap, so you can fill in and around those as needed.

EDIT_: oops, I misunderstood your post. I thought you TOOK the class for 3 and they gave you 6. I understand now that you took it for 6 and they gave you 6. They won't change it to 3, but maybe you could look at taking it out and using a 3 cr class in its place instead? I'd play with your numbers first and make a plan. Then, go ahead and call to have them remove/swap for the best yield.

Thanks for the replies. I kinda thought that's what would happen. I really don't want to take accounting I again... fortunately, I can take the CLEP/DSST for the CIS credit instead. That shouldn't be too painful. :-)
