Newbie TESC evaluation questions

Newbie here, just got my eval. from TESC. My transfer credits go as far back as 1968, so when I applied I really had no idea how many credits or in what subjects were in my transcripts. (I totally don't remember taking PE in my first semester, but I got 1 credit for it!) Anyway, I knew most of my classes were art or business (the grown-up years) so I just put down BA in art on my app, knowing I could change it.

Well, it looks like it's gonna be BSBA mgmt. It uses every single one of my credits, and I even have a couple of upper level courses I didn't remember. I do have a couple of questions about my eval. I hope someone can help answer.

1. On my BAart eval. It shows Marketing Mgmt, MAN-299. (I remember taking it as intro to marketing) under free electives, and on my BSBA eval. It has it under GMS required: MAN-299 Spec. Stud. In selected topics, not marketing, and I still have to take Intro to Mktg. not really a big deal, just a little confused. Does SL, CLEP, Dantes transfer as MAR-301? Just don't want to take the wrong thing.

2. ACC-201 Intermed. Acctng. I Is under GMS electives, and ACC-303 Cost Accounting is under GMS required. So I still have to take the equivalent of ACC-101 Princ. Of Financial Acctng. And ACC-102 Princ. Of Mgrl. Acctng. I have read a few posts here about some Cleps, Dantes, SL's as other things (one transfers as Cost acctg., etc.) I am a little confused and don't want to duplicate, so what should I look at that transfers as 101 and 102?

To your first question, yes the CLEP in Marketing will come in as MAR-301. MAR-299 is a fictional code, what happens is that when they don't have an equivalent course they assign a fake one at the correct level. You can request them to fix that once you are enrolled and they might match it to something else, otherwise codes of 199, 299, 399, and 499 are for courses which don't match. On the eval is shows up with the correct title to match the original course but may show up as "Spec. Studies" on the transcript or other evals because it isn't actually a real course match, rather the school is giving you credit for something they can't code.

On the second question, you can use CLEP's accounting exam but it only counts for ACC-101 at TESC (see CLEP - College-Level Exam Program), otherwise you can use Straighterline for both courses (see Transfer College Credits To Thomas Edison State College (TESC) - StraighterLine).

Thank you Cooperalex; just what I needed. I haven't seen that chart before, very helpful. I suspect the marketing course transferred the way it did because it was a comm. college course and probably can't transfer as MAR-301 (UL).

I'm planning on signing up for a few SL courses before the Nov. 1st boycott (no way am I flashing my IDs at a webcam or relinquishing my computer control to a stranger.) This will definitely help me choose.

I kind of feel I need a bit of structured study before I embark on the self-study Cleps and Dantes, to get me into 'study mode'.

Okay, here's the caveat. I'm shooting from the hip as I haven't searched the forum. With that in mind, I thought that Marketing was a lower level course with CLEP, but that TESC considered it an upper level course. With that in mind, and I've never done this, you might want to appeal what TESC says once you enroll. It should be immaterial that you took the course at a community college. At TESC, Marketing is upper level. Okay, that's my $.02 worth of advice, and worth every penny that you paid for it.

Each school is different and most accept CLEP exams as LL but in this case TESC matches the ACE recommendation:

From: ACE CREDIT | The National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training
Credit Recommendation: In the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 3 semester hours in Principles of Management for those candidates scoring 50 or above (12/09).

I can't officially ask TESC since I'm not enrolled yet, but after reading more about their transcript eval. process, I noticed a paragraph about transfers over 10 years old may require a review. I'm wondering if it was classified that way on the BSBA eval. because it is so old and out of date (no internet when I took it.) On my non-business evals, it is called Marketing Mgmt. and is an elective. Perhaps because it is a required business course, they require a more current course for a BSBA. I still get credit as an elective for my old one, and taking it again will be one of my easier courses so it doesn't bother me; I just find it curious.

Has anyone here run into transfer issues with 'old' courses? I'm really surprised and thrilled I'm getting credit for everything.

I have not and I am using classes that I took 25 years ago.

I didn't either, and my oldest courses dated back to December 1976.
