Aleks is a good program and I know they offer two courses: General College Chemistry semester one and semester two.
No, I didn't use ALEKS for this exam, but I think it is a good idea. A few people have expressed an interest in trying it, but, to my knowledge, no one has, yet. I hope it works because it would be nice to find a streamlined study method for the Chemistry CLEP.

I just recently finished my first practice test and I got a 48. I found it a little divergent from the CLEP official study guide test in my 2011 book. The graphs of P(pressure) and T(temperature) threw me, especially the questions asking what point on the graph exists matter as a gas, liquid and solid in equilibrium. What point is it a liquid, etc. I also was inundated by the balancing equations which had 5 or 6 compounds
I was left confused by identifying oxidation numbers and how to number the outermost valences (N, l, ML, etc). I know the period on the periodic table tells us the outtermost valence, but how do we know from the table whether it is S, P, D, F, or G? Can anybody provide some good links to understanding these concepts?
I can see why people find the chemistry test intimidating, if the Peterson's test is any indication, as it involves a wide range of knowledge in the rules and behaviors of chemistry and the math you have to have down pat. So practice practice practice those formula problems.

I'm having my son do chemistry this semester. I considered ALEKS, however (and I know this is lame) I decided not to pay for it. I've paid for his ALEKS for the past....gosh 4 or 5 years, so when his month ends in January, we are done with that account. So, what I've got him registered for is Saylor.org. (free $) There are MANY chem options (including organic and biochem), none for credit, but he's doing to do the gen chem 1. I've not used Saylor myself, so I can't yet speak to it's quality or CLEP-prep-ability, but I'll repost again when he gets near the end. If chem 1 goes well (Jan-Feb-Mar) I'll have him start chem 2 after spring break and then maybe take the CLEP. I'll post back if he does.
I'm loving Saylor if it delivers. Free is free, but crossing my fingers that they seek ACE at some point.
