Need CLEP Suggestion!
#1
Hey everybody I just stumbled on this forum and it looks awesome!

I am currently a mechanical engineering student at UMBC with 12 classes left. Unfortunately I was just diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and will have to take the semester off because of my treatments(chemo!)

So 10 of my classes are upper level engineering which will have to wait. But I was hoping to self study and clep my other 2 classes in my down time.

I still need 1 social science course, and 1 culture class. Any recommendations for the best/easy cleps for these requirements?

Thank you!
Shane

I'll assume when you say 1 course you mean 3 credits. Also, culture? Do you mean humanities?

I think that's a little biased but a pretty good start, to look at.

For humanities, the easiest test has to be analyzing and interpreting literature. If you're well read, you don't need to study for it.

For social sci, I'd do introductory psychology/sociology. I'd say sociology is a little easier with less vocab to remember, but if you have a scientific/engineering background maybe psychology will be more interesting to you.

Sorry to hear about you diagnosis.

As far as an easy SS course, Sociology and American Government are easy. To recommend a culture class, you need to find out from UMBC which CLEPs count for this requirement. A foreign language, Non-US History?

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Thank you for such quick responses!

So I guess for social science I will try either Intro to Sociology or Intro to Psychology.

The culture requirement is weird, it is separate from Humanities. I was reading my schools site and I think the only CLEP they accept for culture is Western Civilization.

I guess now I need to decide which to take first!

Thank you guys so much for the response! Now I just need to register with InstaCert and start browsing the secret forums for my subjects! :coolgleam:

Be sure you check UMBC's policy, I think it's here, http://www.umbc.edu/catalog/2012/appendi...dix_II.pdf

They list "western civ" as SS/C but seem to be giving it 6 credits. They likely mean that you get 3 each fro WC1 and WC2...but that's not what it says. Perhaps you could take both and solve both issues. A&I Lit looks like three credits in English with a rather high, but doable, cut score. Just be careful what you take.

There are a lot of schools out there that offer distance programs. University of North Dakota for example has a lot of UL Mech Engineering online. Here is the fall lineup Online & Distance Education Maybe you can find a couple to keep you busy through the fall. Have you inquired if UNBC has any mechanism to allow you to take distance courses this next semester?

Sorry to hear about the diagnoses...I like your positive attitude. My prayers for your speedy and full recovery.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.
