Is it possible to CLEP an AA degree?

Hello everyone, its been a long time.

My brother has an interest in getting his AA, and I knew from my experience 5 years ago that this would be totally possible with CLEP/DSST.

I was wondering if there are any colleges that grant AA degrees through 100% CLEP/DSST.

His local community college requires 15 credits be taken on campus, leaving 45 credits through transfer.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

TESC or EC should fit the bill:

Thomas Edison State College: Associate in Arts Also do a search on the site for CLEP and Dantes test equivalencies...match those up to the degree requirements and start testing.

Charter Oak State College will allow 57 of 60 credits into their AA but will require a cornerstone course to be completed online at the school. Charter Oak State College - Completing Your Degree

Note that COSC and TESC will allow a good bit of the electives to be from FEMA for free. Don't rule out ALEKS for Math and Straighterline courses that can be completed quickly and cheaply.

I think overall TESC is a little easier (like a reduced Math requirement, no ethics requirement, etc...) But is likely a little more expensive upfront.

Has your brother considered an AS/AAS....the AA is really geared toward people expecting to continue on to a Bachelors degree whereas an AS/AAS is intended as prep for a job (not a hard and fast rule, but true in general). EC requires a capstone course for associate degrees now. He will also need to find an alternative to CLEP (like SL) for the Written English Requirement. Other than those issues, yes it is possible to use credit-by-exam for almost all of an associate degree in liberal arts at EC.

I know. They have not accepted it for a long time now. I am not happy about the new capstone course either.

For WER, they do have an ECE exam option and SL should be an option. With those, it is not the brickwall (required course) that it could be.

Yes, at least there are options. I think a Capstone for an associates is a bit over the top.

I chose to get an associate degree because I know that life happens. (I was not able to finish high school.) It was important to me to wrap up my credits into a college degree on the way to finishing my bachelor's degree. If I had been required to take a capstone course, it would have been a deterrent to completing the AS, so I do not think I would have done it. It concerns me that others will avoid it, too, even if they need the degree.

How I miss this forum and the overabundance of great information! Thank you so much!

I put a lot of research and information back in 07/08 on FEMA and TESC so its good to see that there are now a few different extra scenarios to look at.

I'm gathering information on his past experience and schooling, he was National Guard for 5 years and took some classes at Everest (didn't know that one, would have told him to go to an RA school).

I'm in total agreement with you about AS/AAS but I want him to go AA -> BSIT -> MBA if possible. However, this is flexible as I learn more information.

At this time, I am a Barry Alumni and I know I could get him into their ACE Program locally for BSIT (my route). However, this is not set in stone, and if I can get him on the fast track to completing an undergrad I think it will give him the confidence to move forward.

I'm a little behind the 8 ball since I'm 4 years out of this forum, but will be researching it as much as possible to line up his options.

So, we'll do FEMA, prior schooling, prior military, experiential portfolio, and I'll have him get a few computer certifications on the way.
I'll look into TESC, COSC, and EC.

Incidentally, Barry's ACE program is going online. Barry.edu Adult and Continuing Education.
They have a GPA forgiveness transfer, so even though my GPA was 1.8 in community college, I graduated from Barry grad and undergrad with a 4.0. It might be a new option for anyone here to look at for distance education (and tons of campuses in Florida).

It totally depends on the school. Most schools require that you take a minimum number of credits through their classes. My school requires a minimum of 20 or 25 credits through their classes to be able to get a bachelor's degree through them. You just have ot look at those requirements and talk to their counselor to find out what the requirements are.
