Chemistry @ COSC!!!!!

I absolutely hate Chemistry and am so not a science person... this is the last course I need to graduate :-)

I'm not sure but I THINK my 2 options are either CLEP or StraighterLine.

CLEP might not be an option for me personally since I am horrible at science & self-study will be a huge issue for me. Also in the specific thread there are only 6 replies so it looks like not many people tkae it. So I thought about using StraighterLine and can't find much on it. Also not sure if there are any options outside of these 2.

How did you get Chemistry out of the way and what advice do you have for me?

I would definantly do sl. Does it have to be chemistry? A n P is chartered territory....lots of info on that. I don't think cosc requires the lab either in most cases......you could be done in no time!

Trust me ... Do chemistry with Straighterline. Straighterlines Chemistry was still a bit hard, but honesty, it's at your pace, and you can control the course more. I don't know my math's or sciences but did all of them with Straighterline. Give SL a shot

I'm pretty sure that lab is required, can anyone confirm this for sure? I believe the structure is 6 credits and 3 of those are for the lab. Still on the edge about taking it at SL, I've heard SL is no walk in the park. Please keep posting your thoughts, curious to hear what everyone thinks...

Which degree are you finishing at COSC? Does your science credit have to be in chemistry?

My understanding is labs are 1 credit and do not represent the amount of time required to do the work.

Charter Oak's general education requirements for natural science are as follows:

Students will understand the basic scientific process and theories and be able to apply scientific inquiry. One 4-credit course that includes a lab, or two 3-credit courses. Examples: astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, oceanography, physical geography, physics.

I expect a 6 sh CLEP in Natural Science, Biology, or Chemistry would be treated as equivalent to two 3 sh courses or exams to meet the entire requirement. So would the UExcel in Physics, the ECE in Anatomy and Physiology, or two approved 3 sh natural science DSSTs, ECEs, or the TECEP in Nutrition.

As an alternative, Charter Oak and other schools also offer distance learning natural science courses, 3 sh + 1 sh lab.

1) Where you able to finish in 28 days? I'm going for the $99/month + $40 per course plan.

2) Did you really pay $98 for a lab kit? Sounds, umm, expensive :-(

COSC requires 4-6 credits under Natural Science. 4 would be the typical 3 credit course with a 1 credit lab component (pretty standard). Being a distance education friendly school they realize that it might be difficult to complete a lab, so they allow you to earn 6 credits instead....that's two separate three hour courses. There are several ways to knock this out.

Pass any of the 6 hour CLEP exams...natural science, biology, etc...

Take a College course with lab

Complete a Straighterline course with lab.....or two straighterline courses without a lab. This is why I suggested A&P, it's a well traveled road and would be easier IMO. I would only take the Chem if I really specifically needed it.

Get your books and any required lab supplies before signing up, that way you sign up and hit the ground running. SL lists every course syllabus on it's website....in many cases you might even complete some work before you sign up....that helps minimize your time...if you work it hard you can finish most SL courses in less than a month (some like English are an exception to this rule).

You need TWO science classes to get 6 credits, not one with lab. A science with lab is going to be 4 credits, while a science without lab will be 3. CLEP sciences are worth 6, but you have to hold all that in your brain long enough to test (eeeekkkkk).

My vote is also for SL. You can do part 1 and 2 of any of the sciences and you should be fine.
