Advice Needed Re: Completing BA in English via TESC
#11
FYI to all, since we're on the topic of credit-by-exam through Ohio University - I just found out that as of Fall 2012, Ohio U will no longer operate under the quarter hour system; they will be switching to the standard semester hour system as of 9/2012. Thought that information might come in handy for those of you who, like me, are seeking credit by exam.

That is very significant; thanks for the update!

Sorry I have been away just saw this thread. I have not read it all but something you might want to try and see if TESC will take it as an upper level english is Excelsiors Literacy instruction in elementary school. It is an Education course but it is in Literacy . I used it as a free elective because I just wanted the Education credits but I did get upper level credit for it.

As for alternate route teaching in NJ it is a long and arduous route. If you want more info on that PM me I have cleaned out my inbox so there is room.

Hi Linda!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write. That exam sounds like it's right up my alley (particularly given my career plans AND my need for U/L credit). If it's alright with you, I'll definitely be in touch via PM. Thank you again!!!! Smile

Hi Again Linda!

Just tried to PM you, but got a message that your inbox quota has been exceeded (pesky quotas!). :-)

Let me know when it's free again and I'll send a message your way. Thanks again for offering to help!

I deleted over 50 PM's after you tried the first time and have not received any new. I don't know what the problem is but I just deleted ~100 more so try PM again. If it still doesn't work I will have to get webmaster help.

Hi Linda,

Thanks, as always, for getting back to me. Just tried again and no luck - still getting the same message (re: inbox quota). Sad

This is really annoying. I can't send PM's either. You can E mail me at Lindagerr@yahoo.com. I sent a message to the webmaster to see if he can fix my PM

Update on getting upper level English credits for a BA in English at TESC:

I found out more information about getting upper level credits by going the PLA route. If you are so inclined, there is a separate database for PLA courses that aren't listed on the main TESC website. Here is the link: Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings

I was able to identify a few courses that I could take going this route, they are:

ENG-308 - Proofreading and Editing
ENG-373 - Advanced Fiction Writing
ENG-328 - Writing for Publication
LIT-328 - Irish Literature I

When you go to the link, just type in one word, for example, "literature" and over 175 choices come up for you to go through. Some of them aren't literature, quite a few were music so I'm not sure how they got in there but just skim through them all until you find a few that you think you could do. I sent an email to the PLA department on what I needed to do to get started & here is what I was told:

"Once potential credits (PLAs) are approved, your next step is to submit PLA Portfolio Proposal forms for each potential PLA. When a form arrives here in the PLA office, we identify a PLA mentor for you, and have you register for that PLA “course” to begin the process of discussing, articulating and presenting information about your prior experiential learning."

I sent him an email back asking where I could get the PLA Proposal Form but I guess he left for the day, it was kind of late on Tuesday when I sent the email.

Hope this helps any other English majors. :-)

The form you are looking for is on the TESC forms site:
Thomas Edison State College: Access all student forms for extensions, enrollments, registrations and more

It may cost almost as much as a regular course, but PLA's can come in handy for course areas you can't test out of.

Good luck.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.
